Oh my gosh, YOU GUYS, I am still so overwhelmed and thrilled with the response and community that came with yesterday’s blog post on being an advocate for those we love. I just get choked up thinking about how grateful I am for this community. I am truly so blessed by each of you.
Yesterday, we went a bit heavy, so today, I thought we’d go a bit controversial (no, I’m not talking about Beth Moore’s memoir more 😉 ), I’m sharing another edition of TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE but this time…it’s all about CEREAL!
Oh.
It’s game time.
I don’t know why but when I stand on the cereal aisle, I always see boxes that speak to my heart and then other boxes that I just DO NOT UNDERSTAND why people keep buying them. I know it’s silly, but it’s my experience that people are pretty passionate about their breakfast cereals and while I think some are highly underrated, there are many that are OVERRATED. So, I’m breaking down my Top Five and Bottom Five.
If you missed my last post, I shared my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: HOUSEHOLD CHORES, and before that, TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: CHRISTMAS SONGS, and before that, TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: THANKSGIVING FOODS and before that, my original post: TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: MOVIES which was…um…controversial and highly opinionated to say the least 😉 . If you missed that post and want to see which movies I think are underrated and which ones are overrated…make sure you read it HERE.
Now…just to repeat what I said in the original post, these aren’t going to be my normal “Shay picks”. We can leave things like Pumpkin Spice Cheerios at the door because you all know I love them, so that’s not fun to just rehash. I’m going to try and be fair here. I’m talking about normal, every day cereal that I don’t typically talk about here in blog world but reallllly love or realllly don’t love. We are talking about my TOP FIVE cereals that are perhaps a bit under appreciated but super fantastic and then my BOTTOM FIVE cereals that so many people love that I think are overrated and not that great.
Here we go, in reverse order here are my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CEREALS…
#5 Quaker Oatmeal Squares
When was the last time you had a bowl of these babies?! They’re slightly sweet, do not get soggy and are super satiating. I love them with milk in a bowl, but I like them even more just for snacking. Put some in a baggie, toss it in my bag and it’s a great snack on the go. Why aren’t people talking about this cereal?! I feel like it’s a better version of Shredded Wheat (in a weird sort of way…). I really, really like this cereal!
#4 Apple Jacks
Awwwwwww…Apple Jacks…the better version of Cheerios. I might be 41 now but pour me a bowl and watch me get giddy over my milk turning all orangey-green in the apple deliciousness that is this cereal. For years and years, I would eat dry cereal as my dessert at night. Apple Jacks was always high in my rotation. Dry, with milk…it never disappoints.
#3 Golden Crisps
I can’t get enough of these. I think the fact that his name is Sugar Bear really sums it up. I’m not exactly sure what shape these bite-sized bits of heaven are (they look a bit like a black-eyed pea if you ask me), but they taste like sugary heaven. Are they healthy? Probably not. Are they delicious? Yes! I just asked my kids if they’ve had them and they all acted like they didn’t know what I was talking about. They’re just SO GOOD!
#2 Special K Red Berries
Give me all the freeze-dried strawberries in this cereal. All of them. Regular Special K? It’s soggy before my spoon hits the bowl. The Red Berry version? Way crispier and more delicious. I feel a bit like an astronaut when I eat the dried berries (isn’t their entire diet freeze-dried?!), but it doesn’t bother me one bit. I could eat this for breakfast or after dinner for dessert. Yes, please!
And, in my opinion, the #1 most underrated and delicious cereal is…
#1 Raisin Bran Crunch
Hear me out. I think regular Raisin Bran is pretty boring. I mean, I saw this meme…
…and could not stop laughing, buuuuut if you add that “crunch” thing to it, it’s freaking delicious! When Andrew and I first started dating, we bonded over our mutual disdain for Raisin Bran but love for Raisin Bran Crunch. Am I the only one who sees the difference here? It’s really SO delish than the original version.
So that was my TOP 5, now…here are my BOTTOM 5 CEREALS that people tend to love but I just do not get.
#5 Cracklin’ Oat Bran
I’m not interested in eating cat food shaped cereal.
#4 Grape Nuts
I grew up with Grape Nuts as a staple in our house. I’m not saying it’s terrible. I mean, if you add enough sugar to it, you almost don’t realize you’re eating gravel, BUT I have a problem with the portion size being basically one tablespoon AND the fact that I’m almost guaranteed to break a tooth with each bowl. I’m not quite sure what it’s actual mass appeal is all about. Speaking of which…
#3 Frosted Flakes
They’re not great, they’re boring and soggy. They’re not terrible, but Tony the Tiger, have you never had Cinnamon Toast Crunch? Now, that’s a cereal I could get excited about.
#2 Rice Krispies
Perfect for marshmallow treats, immediately soggy the minute my milk hits the bowl. I swear, “snap, crackle and pop” is just the sound of cereal rapidly dissolving into a soggy mess.
And finally the most over-rated cereal…
#1 Cheerios
Unless you’re eight months old, you should not be eating this. I mean, for real, y’all. This is baby food. Grab the honey nut version if you’re really wanting a yummy cereal, but this just tastes like bland, slightly salty cardboard.
And those, my friends, are my Top Five, Bottom Five CEREALS!
Now spill it, I want to read your lists too! Please share in the comment section!
Make sure you also check out my 18 DESSERT RECIPES FEATURING CEREAL post today too! There is a recipe (or two) in that post you’re going to want to try this weekend! xx
Jess says
I just tried Cheerios Honey Oat crunch. It’s amazing! A great cross between Honey Nut Cheerios and granola!
Wendy says
This is my current favorite cereal. Love it!
Elspeth says
I love these posts!! But have to disagree with one, I’m a big Cheerios fan! I love it as a breakfast or even as a snack!
http://www.elspethsdaybyday.com
Julianna says
Yes to oatmeal squares! They were one of my random pregnancy cravings and have been on the grocery list ever since!
Anna says
But Cracklin Oat Bran tastes so good!
Tara says
Yes! I came here to say this too. Shay, have you tried Cracklin’ Oat Bran? Sooo good, one of my favorites!
Kelly says
I also love Cracklin’ Oat Bran as a snack! I’m not sure I’ve ever eaten it with milk.
Michelle B says
I used to eat it with soft serve ice cream in college YUM! Now just milk or plain!!!
Rachel says
Cracklin’ Oat Bran is my fave…but, now I can’t unsee the cat chow. Thanks a lot, Shay!😘😂
Sheaffer Sims says
Shayyyyyyy!!!! I’m DYING! Your review of Grape Nuts might be the funniest thing you’ve ever written!!!!!! I too LOVE Special K Red Berries, but I could fight you over your comments about Frosted Flakes.
Erika Slaughter says
I much prefer a soggy cereal-like sometimes would pour a bowl and walk away to let it get soggy. Opposites attract. Right?! 😂😂 My faves are Honey Bunches of Oats with Strawberries and Reese’s!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m gagging, friend.
Tanya says
You 2 crack me up.
Shay is winning this comment… crunch all the way 😉
Amy Heinl says
Soggy cereal is like wallpaper paste…🤮
Mix and Match Mama says
I will never not think of that now! Hahahaha!
Dawn says
The only cereal that should be intentionally soggy is oatmeal. Erika….girl……get some help….
Mix and Match Mama says
I gag just thinking about it.
Kelly Marie Sites says
100% agree on all of your top cereals. Also, need to add PEANUT BUTTER CAP’N CRUNCH. Now, I never buy these or eat them anymore. But I dream of a day when I allow myself to eat them. They are so good. And Lucky Charms. I love that cereal. Again, I haven’t eaten them in 20 years (because…adulting, sugar, crap foods). But I dream of heaven where I will eat them for breakfast every day.
Kristen says
I LOVE Cracklin Oat Bran! Another one of my all time favorite is OH’s!!! (not even sure if they make them anymore?)
Bottom- Lucky Charms, now that is cat nip w/ blah marshmallows!!
Lindsey says
Yes to Oh’s!!! I forgot about them!
Tara says
Yes – OH’s! I only recently discovered them, but they are soo good!
Mary says
I’m reading this post as I eat my daily bowl of Quaker Oatmeal squares! 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re just SO GOOD, right?!
Pamela says
I LOVE Captain Crunch Peanut Butter. I think I ate it twice a day in college 🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!! That’s another great one!!!
Anne-Marie says
I eat Grape Nuts mixed with Cheerios every.single.day for breakfast. Does it taste like sawdust with gravel sprinkled on top? Maybe, but there was a shortage of Grape Nuts in 2020, so I can’t be the only one! 🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
Whhhhhhat? I’ve heard of mixing cereals but never this combo. I am wildly curious now.
Ria says
Maybe it’s nostalgia but my dad always mixed grape nuts with yogurt and I still do it to this day. My kids think I’m nuts😂
SS says
Shay,
Love Raisin Bran Crunch!!! There were some others that I was like yes. Not to eat every day, but I loved Corn Pops and we always do a box of seasonal…Lucky Charms at St. Patrick’s day and Frankenberry at Halloween time. Lol.
I always want rice krispies when we pick fresh blueberries. We always ate them as a kid with blueberries.
When I was little I would not put milk in my cereal because of the sogginess. I would just pour a bowl of cereal and grab a spoon…lots of crunch. Lol!
My mom had a recipe for the crackling oats to make into a bran muffin. Lol. That’s the I only way we would eat it. Lol.
Kristen says
shay – we love you !!!! BUT your top five / bottom five posts just aren’t the same without hearing Andrew’s as well 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
He wasn’t around for me to ask when I wrote this! I need to ask him!
sandi says
What a fun post… we are not big cereal eaters over here, the kids would rather have eggs or oatmeal for breakfast. BUT as a snack, cereal hits the spot. Of course when you mentioned Grape Nuts, I had all sorts of feels for Marjorie Post and how that cereal change the course of breakfast for an entire country!
Top Five:
1) Cinnamon Toast Crunch
2) Lucky Charms (this cereal got me through some lean college days)
3) Raisin Bran Crunch
4) Apple Jacks (ah, childhood in a box)
5) Special K with berries
Bottom Five:
1) Golden Grahams (too soggy)
2) Grape Nuts (google the history of grape nuts and see all the things they have sponsored)
3) Sugar Pops / Corn Pops (don’t remember the name completely but it had pops in it)
4) Rice Krispy (only good in rice krispy treats)
5) Shredded Wheat
Edina says
I am not a cereal person at all except for Special K Fruit and Yogurt! that is delicious!!!
Madison says
This post had me laughing! You are too funny describing the bottom 5 cereals! Thanks for the laugh this morning 🙂
Amy Heinl says
I am not a big cereal eater ever but my favorite was King Vitamin followed by Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
Susan says
Totally agree with your top 5, Love them all! The bottom five is a different story – grapenuts for sure and I can see the cracklin oat bran but Frosted flakes they would be in my top 5 over oat squares.
Kay says
Too funny! Okay, in general, I don’t eat cereal. Like, ever ever ever. And if I were to, it would be dessert! However. Let’s pretend I DO eat cereal. I have to go with Lucky Charms! I think they are so good. I definitely do try to weed out as much of the cereal as I can and load up with marshmallows, but I do really like some Lucky Charms.
I agree with you on pretty much all else! Quaker oatmeal squares are actually SO SO good.
Oh! And I LOLd and agree on Grape Nuts. But after I read the book you recommended ‘Marjorie Post’ I wanted to try them again. I mean she ate them and lived forever right? So, I added some vanilla sweetened almond milk and TONS of fresh berries and it was, hmm, manageable? So if you ever want to try Grape Nuts bc you need to break a tooth, try them that way.
This was a fun post-thanks for sharing!
Carissa says
Thank you so much for this post today Shay! The lightness of it to start my day is just what I needed!! Your blog is my favorite because you do such a great job of balancing the fun and heavy. Can’t wait to read all the comments to come and hear others likes/dislikes!
Here’s mine:
Top 5:
1. Banana Nut Crunch
2. Honey Nut Cheerios
3. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
4. Golden Grahams
5. Lucky Charms
Bottom 5:
1. Fruit Loops
2. Honey Smacks
3. Corn Pops
4. Rice Krispies
5. Cocoa Puffs
Elizabeth Whisler says
I’m gonna have to try the Oatmeal Squares. I don’t even remember seeing it. I love a good Honey Nut Cheerio…with the Banana Almond milk!!! MMMM!!!! Or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. My husband loves Grape Nuts…on vanilla ice cream. I gave him the side eye for years and wouldn’t even taste it. But I finally did…and I’m not gonna lie it’s pretty dang delicious. I let it sit for a bit and get (very slightly) softer but there is something weirdly satisfying about the crunch on the ice cream. In a bowl with milk? Disgusting. Hahaha…
Christina G. says
OMG- Shay! You had me literally laughing out loud on your comments over the cereals! “Cereal that is shaped like cat food….and will break a tooth eating a bowl…” 😂😂😂 SO true! I couldn’t agree more with your bottom fives, although I was wondering if fruity pebbles would be in there, basically the same thing as rice crispies, except like 2 pounds of sugar, dumped into your cereal, making the sweetest, most disgusting milk you’ve ever had. I will say one of my favorite kid “treat” cereals is Reese’s peanut butter puffs. Me and my grandmother used to love eating them as a little sweet treat snack when she was alive🥰 try them sometime! Thank you for the free entertainment this morning!
MelanieL says
Love this and laughing because if there’s regular Raisin Bran in one of those cereal dispensers at a continental breakfast I am all over it, like I will have two bowls with milk. I will take some dry in a cup for a snack on the road. My son once brought me a dry cup of it home from a hotel stay for baseball that I didn’t attend LOL…I am so weird. 🙂
K.K. says
Ah ha ha… These are so fun! I agree with many that you love, but Frosted Flakes? Those things are the BEST! 🙂
Brooke says
This post made me realize there are a lot of cereals I have never tried. Frosted mini wheats is one of my go to cereals so now I’m adding Quaker Oatmeal Squares to my grocery list to try. Every once in a while I get a craving for Golden Crisps. I thought I was the only one that loved that cereal! 😉
Cindy Featherston says
You should try GrapeNut Flakes with bananas! So good!
Kallen says
Agree with grape-nuts “as-is”…but cover that cereal in milk and then microwave for a minute then toss some blueberries on top. So good! My current favorite cereal is Peanut Butter Chex!
MelanieL says
I love Peanut Butter Chex too…I feel like I’m eating peanut butter pie when I eat it in a bowl with cold milk!
Jenn W. says
I love Grape Nuts ( hear me out)…in yogurt! It stays crunchy and adds great texture to already delicious greek yogurt.
Mix and Match Mama says
I could possibly consider that…
Jenn says
Agree 100%!!!!
Deena says
I don’t really buy regular (not high fiber) cereal much anymore but really like Life and Honey Bunches of Oats if I do. My favorite guilty pleasure back in the day was Captain Crunch. Now I have Trader Joe’s Hi Fiber cereal with a little Kasha Rise when I’m not having oatmeal or smoothies. I may try Oatmeal Squares, though. If I were still in Canada, I’d buy Shreddies.
Bethany says
This cracked me up! I agree with most of the bottom 5. Grape Nuts absolutely need extra sugar but are WAY better if you warm them up. Sounds odd, but really good!
Robin says
C’Mon people, does no one else love Alphabet’s?!?? Or Cap’n Crunch berries?!? BTW, LOVE Golden Crisps!! I had forgoten about them. Also, I like the Grape Nut Flakes. It’s the equivalent of Raisin Bran vs Raisin Bran Crunch. Also, you are hilarious.
Mix and Match Mama says
Alphabets! I haven’t thought about those in YEARS!!!!!
Dena A says
I have to laugh at your description of Grape Nuts. First off, what do ‘grapes’ and ‘nuts’ have anything to do with this cereal?! Secondly, I did have it also as a staple in my household growing up, but the only way I ate it was if it was swimming in milk and I poured probably as much sugar in as I had Grape Nuts in the bowl. I may have even had more sugar than cereal if I’m being honest.
Thanks for the laugh today!
Terry says
Have you ever tried hot grape nuts? Add some milk, brown sugar or real maple syrup and a little butter and heat in the microwave. Totally different than eating it cold.
Staci Patyrak says
I LOVE cereal! When I was an RA in the dorms in college, I hosted a late night cereal bar and it was a hit!
Top Five:
5-Lucky Charms
4-Cocoa Krispies
3-Cinnamon Toast Crunch
2-Wheat Chex (but I add sliced bananas and Splenda)
1-Cranberry Almond Crunch – If you have tried this, it is similar to Raisin Brand Crunch, but with dried cranberries instead of raisins! Yum!!
Totally agree that plain Cheerios are the worst! Taste like cardboard. Funny thing is that it is still the only kind of cereal my kids will eats
Ashley says
Shay,
OMG, I am DYING at your Bottom 5 cereal descriptions. “I’m not interested in eating cat food shaped cereal” made me LOL and spit out my coffee, and that was just the beginning. This post is pure gold.
Jen says
I grew up in a no sugary cereals allowed household. We always had Cheerios and Rice Krispies and I still buy these! My dad ate Wheaties (yuck). And we sometimes had Crispix. We got Kix for a special treat! I’ll buy my kids’ faves of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Lucky Charms because I don’t want to deprive them, haha!
I haven’t tried Raisin Bran Crunch. Do you like Raisin Nut Bran? It’s a good one!
Ali Bishop says
What’s the favorite AND healthiest cereal?! I’ve been on the hunt for years!
Mix and Match Mama says
I do really love Magic Spoon! If you haven’t tried it before, all of the flavors are delicious AND they’re packed with goodness. https://magicspoon.com/
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
I’m adding Oatmeal Squares to my grocery order now. How have I never had it before?!
But Shay. Seriously. Frosted Flakes are SO good (although the Trader Joe’s brand is actually crunchier and better)! 🤪
I also love Kix. It’s so simple and tasty, and it also isn’t loaded with sugar.
Lindsey says
If you like Raisin Bran Crunch, you must try Raisin Nut Bran! It is soooo good! They cover the raisins in this nutty mixture that I can’t describe and it’s just so delicious. Thanks for the fun post!
KC says
I’m so happy to see someone else love Golden Crisp as much as me! My husband just rolls his eyes when I come home with it but my Grands love it too!
Elizabeth says
Golden Crisps are like the Sugar Smacks of my youth.
Give me a bowl of that with a piece of white bread toasted with butter and I am in HEAVEN!
I also love Fruit Loops for snacking.
Such a fun post!!
Dawn says
Yep just finished a box of Quaker Oatmeal Squares last night. I thought I was the only person eating them! All time #1. Not a fan of grape nuts.
Allie says
Best cereal ever is OH’s – most people have never tried it – not every grocery store carries it. A must try if you have not!
Kristen says
I replied that my fav ever was OH’s!!!! Do they still make it? I can’t find it here in Boston at my grocery store.
Angela Banae says
When I was a kid, I always complained about eating Rice Krispies. I always told my mom that when the milk was poured over them, they smelled like wet cats and dogs. 😂😜
Mix and Match Mama says
I can never unread that. Bahahaha!
Susan DelleDonne says
I use the cracklin oat bran to make a chocolate chip cookie and they taste great!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have so many questions, Susan!
Paige says
I love oatmeal squares! They’re great dry, with milk, or thrown into home made Chex mix. Strangely I love the regular Raisin Bran. I think it’s because my grandma always had it and I would eat it at her house. So there’s some nostalgia in there, but I definitely grew to love it over the years. All time worst cereal though is shredded wheat. It’s just nasty cardboard cereal.
Alison says
You nailed it with your Grape Nuts description! One set of grandparents always had those and I could never understand what the appeal was. I remember telling my Grandpa (I was maybe 8-9), these are awful and I feel like they’re going to break my teeth! He replied, they already broke mine as he popped out his dentures and winked. 😂 He was the best. But Grape Nuts are definitely not.
Mix and Match Mama says
I just lol at my desk!
Lauren says
Um hello!? Honey Bunches of Oats is amazing! 😉
Corinne says
My Dad ate Grape Nuts every day when I was a kid, so I’ve definitely had my fair share of them. But they are definitely gravel. UNTIL my first pregnancy when all I wanted was Grape Nuts with TONS of sugar. It was so weird. She’s 11 now and I havent had them since.
Connie says
I mostly agree with you! I do eat Cheerios with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and a cut up banana. I always liked Cookie Crisp, but they do get soggy quick with milk. Or Reese’s! My daughters fave! Of course we rarely buy them because I’m trying to eat healthy these days. Basic Four is yummy! And yes to Oatmeal Squares. You are so right about the Grape Nuts! Ha!
Sarah says
You have to get over the look of Cracklin Oat Bran bc they taste like oatmeal cookies! So delish!!
Kristen B. Smith says
I definitely agree with your top five. Our family (three generations) also loves Quaker Oh’s but they are kind of hard to find now. My daughter is stuck on the Cinnamon Cheerios Oatmeal Crunch right now. They are great also!
Heidi says
Okay this is sort of cereal-related, but Chex has a blueberry favor with a FANTASTIC blueberry-lemon Chex mix recipe on the back of the box! It’s so spring-y! You need to try it! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Whaaaaaaat? I’m so intrigued!
joanne says
No one in our house even eats cereal! I can’t remember the last time we bought a box (not counting chex or crispex that I use to make chex mix)… but when I was younger I used to really like PB captain crunch, one of the special K’s that had pecans or almonds in it, and Life (I think that was the name of it…).
Diane says
Kellogg’s Special K cinnamon & pecan cereal…oh man, so good!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t remember seeing this version. I’m going to look for it!
Cheriesse says
Just say “No!” to over-processed, high sugar foods like feral in a box! It’s terrible for everyone!
Katie Stewart says
I love this game. Please never discontinue this! 😂
Top 5 Cereals:
5. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
4. Rice Krispies
3. Corn Pops
2. Honey Nut Cheerios
1. Frosted Mini Wheats
Bottom 5 Cereals:
5. Apple Jacks
4. Honey Smacks. The after taste. I can’t.
3. Reese’s Puffs
2. Cookie Crisps
1. Frosted Flakes
Jenn says
You are I are like.. the same. I’ve been following your blog for years, I can almost even say a decade now… and we have seen eye to eye on LITERALLY everything.
But we are not cereal friends. At all. No sleepovers, sorry.
Howwww can you sleep on Cheerios and include GOLDEN CRISP in your top five? And anything with RAISINS in your top ONE??
Shay, I am shocked!! I’m going to continue on in my blog checks and forget this post ever existed.
Ok I’m kidding on the extremity of things but I’m just shocked! Raisin Bran???
Holly says
Grape nuts with brown sugar and microwaved! Yummy!
Amy Branderhorst says
I love the top 5 bottom 5 posts! They are hilarious!! These lists aren’t bad but, you are missing some of the best cereals ever made! Cinnamon toast crunch, peanut butter crunch, lucky charms, fruit loops, fruity pebbles, capn crunch berries… I am 40 but still eat like a teenager 🙂
Jaren says
I forgot all about Oatmeal Squares!!! I LOVED them! Guess I need to introduce my kids to that one!
Brenda says
Shay! If you love the Quaker Oat Squares, please tell me if you’ve tried the Quaker Baked Cheddar Snack Mix?! It’s those crunchy, yummy squares, but cheddar (and other snacky stuff)! SO GOOD!
Mix and Match Mama says
Whaaaat?! Googling it!
Kristin E says
I can’t believe there isn’t anyone talking about Life cereal. Cinnamon Life is my childhood. My parents wouldn’t let me get the “sugar” cereals, but somehow thought Life was “healthy”.
Amy Grace Duncan says
Same!! Life cereal made the healthy cut in my family too!
Melody says
I’m not a big cereal eater but when I do get some my favorite is Life – “Mikey likes it… he really likes it…” 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Yessssss! I love Life! I actually could have listed Life as an honorable mention. I love both regular and cinnamon.
Lois says
For many years our daughters referred to Life as “Mikey” & ate lots of it. Wheaties (is it still available?) along with milk & our home canned/jarred peaches tasted like coconut, I thought. And I make a yummy Grapenut Pudding dessert. Grapenut ice cream, which is a regular vanilla base with grape nuts churned in) has been a homemade favorite (hand churned) in my family for several generations, at least from the beginning of the 1900’s.
Jacqui says
I had to read every comment because this was so funny to me. My top 5:
1. Quaker Oatmeal Squares
2. Cracklin’ Oat Bran
3. Grapenuts
4. Raisin Bran
5. Cheerios
Bottom 5: every sugary cereal.
I mix cereal too and have definitely done the cheerio/grapenut combo. Also love grapenuts on ice cream!! The local ice cream place here (I live in MA) sells a grapenut flavor hahaha!
I never grew up drinking milk and did not like plain milk… we all ate our cereal mixed with Nesquik! As an adult I eat plain nut or oat milks with some high protein, legume tasting, blah cereal from Whole Foods.
Holly Florida says
Raisin Nut Bran beats out Raisin Bran Crunch.
Kristy Moore says
Where’s the Lucky Charms?!!??!! There’s nothing better!!!
Wendy says
Changing just one letter ACTUALLY makes it cat food.
Cracklin’ Cat Bran
Get Meow Mix on the phone STAT!
Maybe we could somehow market the “gravel” to them as well.
🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
STOP! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! Oh my gosh, you’re so right!!!!
Jill says
But have you ever put Oatmeal Squares in a mix with popcorn & peanut butter m&m’s? The best!
Plain cheerios = gross. Honey nut cheerios = best ever. Always my base for mixing cereals 🙂
Frosted mini wheats?? SO good – in milk or by itself!
Mix and Match Mama says
MY MIND IS BLOWN. And Shredded Wheat is only good if you put the frosting side down on your tongue (and not facing up). That’s a fact 😉 .
Kay says
This is 100% truth. If you flip the shredded wheat it tastes TERRIBLE and like a completely different cereal. Dear Cereal Makers-FROST BOTH SIDES.
andrea says
i totally agree with you on raisin bran crunch and special k red berries! both are great!!!
Caroline says
I almost agree with the placement of the Rice Krispies. HOWEVER, I’ve found that different brands of rice krispies taste different. The way to eat them is to use the HEB brand and instead of milk, put some cottage cheese on top and on top of the cottage cheese put blueberries and chopped pecans. I no longer live in Texas, so I no longer choose to eat rice krispies since I can’t have the HEB version 🙂
Amy Grace Duncan says
Oh my gosh, your descriptions of cheerios and grape nuts are hilarious and SO true!! Baby food and gravel!😂😂😂 So funny.
Kacy M says
I like honey bunches of oats, frosted wheaties, Raisin Bran, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and cocoa pebbles (in no order).
Jaime says
I would love to see a top five bottom five for your picks on kids clothing brands, Any chance one might be posted?:)
Mix and Match Mama says
Like little kids or my bigger kids? I will write down that idea!
Jaime Matherson says
more little kids
Mary Jane McNeill says
My son picks the red berries out of the Special K and just eats the cereal. Let me know if you want me to send you the ones he’s picked out. 🙂
Alina says
Cereal is a topic I could talk about all day because I love most cereal. I love all of your top 5 except I’ve never had Quaker Oatmeal Squares but I’m definitely going to try them! I’ve never had Grape Nuts! I only have a top five: 5. Special K Red Berries 4. Frosted Cheerios 3. Trix 2. Coco Puffs 1. Cap’n Crunch
