Happy happy Tuesday, friends!
On the way to our town square Friday night, we started talking about…
…how excited we are for The Juice Bar to open back up this summer on Nantucket, and then we started discussing our favorite flavors and well, that lead to a spirited discussion that resulted in today’s blog post.
You guys, I thought my family discussing cereal was passionate. Apparently, ice cream brings out even bigger opinions.
While Madeley will always order vanilla (always!), Ashby is the most adventurous, Smith and Andrew are the most similar, no one really loves my faves.
I have a feeling some of you might be equally as passionate about this subject as we are.
Ready, set, here we go, it’s my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: ICE CREAM FLAVORS.
#5: BUTTER PECAN
I feel like this is a very underrated ice cream flavor. It’s crunchy, it’s a little buttery, it often has a swirl of caramel inside as well. I don’t think people give this flavor enough love.
#4: ROCKY ROAD
As you can see, I don’t care for “plain” ice cream. I want “all the things” in my ice cream. Really, you could leave out the ice cream and just give me a scoop of “things”. I feel like Rocky Road is the closest thing to “everything but the kitchen sink” that you can get when ordering ice cream. Chocolate chips? Sure. Marshmallows? Why not? A nut or two? Add ’em. It never disappoints.
#3: COOKIES & CREAM
I don’t understand anyone who doesn’t think this is the most genius combination known to man. Forget peanut butter and jelly going together, ice cream and Oreo cookies is where the real perfect combo lies. I love it because every bite is either a nice chunk of cookie (yes, please) or it tastes like you just dipped your Oreo into milk (again, yes, please!).
#2: MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP
I am the only one in my family that loves this combination. Ashby thinks it’s “okay”, but I LOVE IT. On Nantucket, they even add sugar cookie bits to it as well which only ups my enjoyment. There is something just divine about the minty-ness and the chocolate and the creaminess. Yes, YES, please!
#1: PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE DOUGH
My #1 favorite though without a doubt. Regular cookie dough ice cream doesn’t really excite me because if you don’t get a bite of cookie dough, you’re basically just eating boring vanilla ice cream. Peanut Butter Cookie Dough though means every bite is flavorful with or without the extra amazing cookie dough.
So, those are my TOP FIVE, but what about my…
#5: RUM RAISIN
Yes, let’s take shriveled up grapes and add them to a liquor flavor that is only good when you add copious amounts of coconut and pineapple to it. Yes, let’s take those two things and put them in our ice cream. No thank you.
#4: PISTACHIO
I mean, if this is your favorite, I think we need to have a chat about you being exposed to other ice cream flavors. I am positive Baskin Robbins has 30 other flavors you will like better. It’s like biting into bland ice cream that has tiny rocks inside.
#3: ORANGE SHERBET
I mean, sure, if I’m in the hospital post-tonsillectomy, okay. It’s like eating Jell-O in my opinion…it’s best saved for recovery. It’s basically medicinal.
#2: CHOCOLATE
I mean, it just doesn’t interest me. If you add a bunch of “stuff” to it (a la Rocky Road), okay, I’ll have a scoop. But by itself? All plain and boring? I think I’d rather have a scoop of vanilla. I really think I’d opt for nothing than a scoop of chocolate. It just doesn’t excite me at all. At least Pistachio has little pebbles inside.
#1: STRAWBERRY
I do not, LIKE DO NOT, understand people who pull up to McDonald’s and order a strawberry milkshake. I love me a fresh strawberry but please no strawberry ice cream. I do not get the appeal at all. It doesn’t taste like a fresh strawberry (unlike a strawberry sorbet), it tastes like muddled milky strawberries. Gag. I can barely type this sentence.
Speaking of my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE today, look at what this cutie ordered from The Juice Bar…
…one of each 😉 .
Okay, it wouldn’t be a TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE without Andrew weighing in too.
ANDREW’S TOP FIVE:
5: COOKIE GELATO
4: A BRAUM’S MIX WITH M&MS
3: PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE DOUGH
2: TRIPLE CHOCOLATE MOUNTAIN (from The Juice Bar)
1: COFFEE CAKE
ANDREW’S BOTTOM FIVE:
5: DREAMSICLE
4: ANY FRUIT ICE CREAM
3: CRANBERRY ANYTHING
2: SORBET
1: MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP
And those, my friends, are my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: ICE CREAM FLAVORS!

…I’m also sharing my PEANUT BUTTER AND WHISKEY COCKTAIL today too!
I’ll see you back here tomorrow! xx
Elspeth says
I like anything chocolate with a crunch too! Plus you can’t go wrong with a good sweet and salty mix! Mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, m&m are all great choices! I can’t do a coffee flavor.

Cindy O'Leary says
What Flavors I like: Coffee, Vanilla, HD Caramel Cone, Peppermint and Jamoca Almond Fudge
Flavors I don’t like: Plain Chocolate (so gross) and any of those “ices” Margarita, Daiquiri…Bubblegum-
bette says
love this post because ice cream is my favorite after dinner dessert.
my top 5: i am very specific about my top 5 faves.
5 – haagen dazs coffee
4 – magnolia’s ube
3 – ghirardelli’s chocolate
2 – mcconnell’s caramel chip
1 – leatherbys mocha royale
my bottom 5:
5 – cookie dough
4 – strawberry
3 – rocky road
2 – mint chip
1 – anything banana flavored
Mix and Match Mama says
I very much appreciate how specific this list is! I love how your bottom five is basically a combo of both my lists!
Melissa says
Homemade strawberry ice cream is 100X better than store bought. Try to make it
Emilee says
Whenever I order mint chocolate chip, my husband tells me that I could have brushed my teeth and chewed an ice cube for the same effect. 🤪
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew Shull would agree!
Katie Compton says
My husband says you could eat a Hershey bar and then gargle with mouthwash to get the same effect as mint chocolate chip. He also has strong feelings about anything lemon… usually some comment about Pledge. Ha!
Mint OREO is even better than mint chocolate chip! 😍
Cris says
My Dad called it “toothpaste flavored ice cream” 😊 It’s probably my second favorite after ✨maple walnut!✨
Natasha says
Your favourite flavours are what my kids order! Hahaha!
I like slightly plainer ones but we mostly go to a local ice cream shop and they make delicious flavours like “honey lavender,” “Earl Grey Tea,” and “strawberry prosecco.” It’s always soooo good and it’s kind of spoiled me for other ice creams. You might even like their strawberry — it has chunks of real strawberry in it. My husbands favourite ice cream from them is a “caramel whiskey brownie.”
Mix and Match Mama says
This ice cream shop sounds SPECIAL!!
Bev says
Whew! When I saw “if you like pistachio” I thought you were going to say “then we can’t be friends!” I’m relieved that even though we differ in ice cream loves, we can still be friends! 😅 Pistachio is my go-to, also love praline pecan and heath candy. I can’t do peanut butter, it goes back to childhood! Lol And never chocolate for me either, never!
Jessica says
Agree with you! Ice cream needs stuff in it! Definitely depends on my mood for my order but I like an Espresso Bean (more so for afternoon ice cream), Coconut Bar (has to have some chocolate chips), anything with peanut butter chunks of some sort, Macadamia nut ice cream and anything with toffee bits!
Fruit ice creams are not my fav. Maybe a black raspberry if it has chocolate chips is ok.
Dana P says
How do we have the exact same taste in ice cream?! I would also add peppermint from Braum’s and straciatella (gelato) from Amorino!
Ruthie Abrusci says
If you enjoy butter pecan (definitely in my top 5), then you have to try Jeni’s Brown Butter Almond Brittle. It’s SO good! Maybe my #1. I’m from Columbus, OH, home of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, but I know you can find her ice cream in lots of places now.
Mix and Match Mama says
Almond Brittle sounds AMAZING!!
Kim says
That’s my all time favorite and Jenis brambelberry. Soooo good! I order on line and have it shipped. Whole Foods also sells it. it’s the best ice cream I’ve had!
Cindi says
Hi, Ruthie!
I’m a transplanted Buckeye who lives in the south. I was home recently, and we had Jeni’s specialty flavors, made for the eclipse. I don’t like fruit flavored ice cream either, but they were fruity and fantastic! Highly recommend Jenni’s! And yes, the Brown Butter Almond Brittle is the best!
Kelly says
I have Jeni’s shipped to me and it is so good! Salted Caramel is definitely my favorite of theirs. I sent my in laws a gift certificate before Christmas and one of the flavors they ordered was a peppermint candy cane and they said that it was their favorite ice cream of all time.
Kate says
Black Raspberry Oreo is one of my favs! Don’t ask me why just try it! And Java Blast is another one I tend to get a lot. With you on the PB cookie dough. I used to live in Charleston, SC. If you ever take a trip there again you have to go to Off Track. Best ice cream in the world. I browse their instagram often just to reminisce lol their Peppermint Bark is delicious around the holidays & that’s coming from someone who’s a hard no to mint cc!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Whhhhhhat?! I am so intrigued! Are the Oreos the “original” variety and then raspberries are in there as well? I do love Peppermint Bark around the holidays!
Kate says
Essentially it’s just like cookies and cream except instead of the base being vanilla it is black raspberry. And yes original Oreos! It’s the bestt!
K.K. says
These are fun!! I’m with you on like the stuff in the ice cream. If I had my way, Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla would always be the base, but maybe I’m biased because it’s made in my hometown! Then add all the extras to make it more fun.
Chastity says
You should try Blue Bell’s Monster Cookie Dough! It’s vanilla base with peanut butter cookie dough, chocolate chips and m&m’s. It’s SO good!
Mix and Match Mama says
As a Texan, I feel ashamed to not know this flavor! Thank YOU for the rec!!
SS says
When I was a kid we toured the Blue Bell plant. Love the ice cream.
We were in TN last fall and introduced hubby and one kiddo to Blue Bell… can’t get it in Michigan… they loved it too. We had Peppermint Bark.
Alison says
Butter Pecan is the supreme flavor! It is truly so underrated. I don’t get it.
Bottom for me is anything that tastes like milk. I hate milk. Yes, I know ice cream is basically milk and sugar. For this reason, Cookies and Cream, Strawberry, plain Vanilla are all a no from me.
My bottom flavor as a mom is Cookie Monster, or whatever they call that vibrantly bright blue one. I made the rookie mistake of letting my daughter choose it when she was 1 1/2, and when I went to change her diaper a while later, her butt cheeks were stained blue! They stayed that way for a couple days. Never again…
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!!! Why is it so underrated? It’s delicious!
SS says
I have to say it .. when I think Butter Pecan…I always think of Grandparents. My grandparents always loved it. We went to get ice cream and asked my neighbor’s grandparents…we all said they will want butter pecan…they did and we all laughed. 😂
Jennifer Goodwin says
Some blog friends and I met up this past weekend in Nashville for our first ever blogger’s weekend retreat! We met in Nashville, because that was the most centrally located place to fly in for two of them; the other two of us drove. I said all of that to say that we ate at Jeni’s ice cream twice; my new favorite flavor is Gooey Butter Cake! It was life changing, and now I can’t stop thinking about it now that I’m back home. I ordered the same flavor both times that we ate there, it was that good. Have you been there when you were in Nashville last year? I don’t know if it’s local to that area, or if there are more locations across the US. I know that we don’t have any here in Memphis.
Mix and Match Mama says
Please describe this Gooey Butter Cake? Were there actual chunks of buttery cake inside? I need deets!!! I have never been!
Brooke says
Blue Bell has a new gooey butter cake ice cream! It does have actual chunks of butter cake in it. I thought it was great.
Hannah M says
They sell Jenis Gooey Butter Cake at Whole Foods and online and it’s THE BEST – chunks of butter cake and swirls of caramel… and the best part is that it’s GLUTEN FREE (you would never know! A lot of their best flavors – gooey butter cake, buttercream bday cake, AND cookies and cream are all GF)
Mix and Match Mama says
Really?! I had no idea!!! Thank YOU, thank YOU for letting me know this!!
Kim says
Yes so good. My kids gave me a subscription to jenis for my birthday. Shipped to my house. Doesn’t get any better. It’s amazing! The white chocolate peppermint/ seasonal is the best! I love ice cream and jenis is my favorite
Kelly says
Rocky Road (I’m with you on this one!) and Baskin Robbin’s Peanut Butter and Chocolate. There are ribbons of peanut butter in it that make me so happy!
Allison says
“At least pistachio has little pebbles inside” LOLOL.
Mint chocolate chip is the best, my whole family loves. Coffee ice cream is delicious too! Also, I’m just glad you spelled sherbet right, lol! And not the typical southern “sHeRbErT”… kills me.
Sara Alexander says
I agree very much with your list. My very very favorite is from Hershey’s called Oatmeal Cookie Craving. It’s cinnamon flavored with Carmel swirl, chocolate bits and oatmeal cookie chunks. One time when my local ice cream stand was closing for the season we bought their remaining stock of it. 😆
Mix and Match Mama says
Okay, this sounds amazing!!
Amy Heinl says
Love this top and bottom series, some of my choices are specific to our local and very best ice cream here in Cosstal NC called Boombalatti’s. They are the best.
Top 5
1. Rocky Road
2. Key Lime Pie
3. Double Chocolate Toasted Almond Fudge
4. Chocolate Raspberry Truffle
5. Mint Choc Chip
Bottom 5
1. Butter Pecan
2. Pralines and Cream
3. Cherry Vania
4. Rum Raisin
5. Pistachio
Mix and Match Mama says
I bet that Key Lime is DELICIOUS!!!
Amy Heinl says
It is so good. You would love it
Jenn Workman says
Amy, I live in Wilmington where we have a couple of Boombalatti locations! It’s the best!
Rae says
Mint chocolate chip is like eating toothpaste with your ice cream. Blah.
Peanut butter cookie dough – WOW. I am totally in. But say more – peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter cookie dough or peanut butter ice cream with choc chip cookie dough or something else?
Debbie says
Mint chocolate chip has ALWAYS been one of my favs. I’m with you as well on adding all the crunch and goodness to my flavors! I also like to ‘dip’ pretzels, or chips while eating my ice cream! 🙂
Sarah M. says
I only ever order mint chocolate chip. I’ve been known to not even get an ice cream if they don’t have that flavour.
SS says
I love strawberry malts when fresh strawberries are used to make it. When we were young we would go to local ice cream place that makes their own ice cream… I would get mint chocolate chip malts. I prefer malts instead of shakes too.
We now go to a place that does soft serve but you can mix and match flavors. I like strawberry chocolate. At home we get Hudsonville (local ice cream maker, but for stores) Brownie batter cookie dough is my fave…light chocolate with chocolate chip cookies dough. My favorite isn’t made my our local place anymore….Muddy snowshoes it was a light chocolate with white chocolate chunks.
Ginger says
I LOVE Mint Chocolate Chip. However, at the ice cream shop across the hall from our art gallery in Joplin — a huge temptation every time I’m there working — they had carrot cake ice cream last week. I had to try it, and it was very good! Tasted just like the real thing. Could even taste the cream cheese frosting in it.
Mix and Match Mama says
What is the name of this ice cream shop? I need to visit the next time we’re there!!
Kelly M Sites says
I’m all about every single one of your top fives. I LOVE mint choc. chip. THE BEST. Rocky Road- the BEST. I need a crunch in my ice cream (just like I need granola in my yogurt). I like to chew my ice cream hahahaha
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!! I am really not interested in granola AT ALL without some sort of texture inside!
Lindsay says
Run, don’t walk, to but Tillamook’s Sea Salt & Honeycomb Toffee ice cream. It’s at HEB. Seriously the best.
Mix and Match Mama says
I am SO INTRIGUED!!!
SS says
Ooh Lindsey… Tillamook s is good!!!
Ashlan says
Ok, I need to know where to get this peanut butter cookie dough! Those are two of my most favorite things!
Cindy says
Fav ice cream hands down is Hershey’s Cappuccino Crunch…Coffee flavored ice cream loaded with a dark chocolate swirl and toffee pieces. It is THE BEST!!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
That sounds amazing!
Kassi says
I do LOVE some Mint Chocolate Chip and some Cookies and Cream! If you like cookies and cream, you should try Blue Bell’s new flavor cookies and cream cone. It ups the ante on the cookies and cream and it is really good! In the summertime I also love Blue Bell’s Southern Blackberry Cobbler. A swirl of blackberry, little chucks of buttery crust…. super yummy!
Kacey says
This is so funny! My top 2 are mint chocolate chip (or mint oreo) and strawberry!! LOL. I also love a good strong coffee or mocha chip. Whatever the flavor, I always have to have jimmies on mine. Little crunchy chocolate bits, yes please! p.s. Mades personality does not match her ice cream choice 😉
Michelle Nobbe says
Mint Chocolate Chip and Cookie Dough are my favorite too!! Did you have the Mint Chocolate Chip from Beach Club at Disney? Delicious!!
MelanieL says
Baskin Robbins Cherries Jubilee is my favorite but there is not one by us thankfully, LOL! And so, so, sorry to make you gag but I order ‘the smallest cup they’ll serve’ of STRAWBERRY at any other place. Minority here, but I don’t like chocolate of any kind in desserts, yikes!
Lora says
CRANTUCKET or TEABERRY 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww Crantucket is delish!
Tina says
Oh, wow! We have the same top five! — Also, why did I have to look so closely to tell if that was a pic of Isaiah or little Smith?! I’ve never noticed that they favor until now!
Sarah says
Now I need to know your favorite brand(s)! Cookies n cream is my go to choice with peanut butter cookie dough coming in 2nd. If I can’t have either of those, give me regular vanilla with 2 chocolate chip cookies so I can make it into a sandwich! I absolutely loathe vanilla bean and chocolate!
Cindy says
I am DEVASTATED no one has mentioned Moose Tracks. Is that just a NC thing? Because it will change your life.
SS says
Ha Ha… I like Moosetrax…it also is called deer tracks here too.
Here in Michigan a couple local places have Pothole. Lol
How many have had Blue Moon?? It is a northern thing. Our family in Florida asked what it tastes like and we are like Uh blue moon it has its own flavor. Lol
Mix and Match Mama says
Someone explain please! What’s in it?
Kacey says
Yes!!! So good! We have that around us too (MA). Vanilla ✔️ fudge ✔️ mini pb cups ✔️ Great combo!
Connie says
Yes!! Any ice cream with peanut butter is delicious! I tried it about two years ago and I was hooked! PB cookie dough, (and choc chip cookie dough), The Tonight Dough by Ben and Jerry’s, Cookies n’ Cream, Monster cookie dough and Superman!
Jenn says
I love ice cream! I don’t know if I could name my top 5, but I’ll give it a shot. Growing up in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Jilbert’s made the best ice cream ever, and it’s still one of my favorite things to get when we go home!
5. Chocolate chip cookie dough (but it needs tons of cookie dough)
4. Peanut Butter Mackinac Island Fudge
3. Mint Mackinac Island Fudge
2. Jeni’s Gooey Butter Cake
1. Amaretto Mackinac Island Fudge
The fudge they mix in isn’t just a fudge ribbon, it’s legit fudge laced through every bite! Makes me so ready for summer ice cream treats 🙂
SS says
Michigan Fudge ice cream… so good. Our local place makes a Mackinac ice cream with huge chunks of fire too!!! Soo good!!!
Toni :0) says
Ice cream always needs treasures in it and the more the better. If it has caramel swirl in it too, well then that’s bonus prizes to me. Except Butter Pecan is just meh for me. LOL. 🤷♀️
Patt says
You and I could be ice cream twins, except for the mint chocolate chip, which is my husband and daughter’s favorite. Now I need ice cream! Our local ice cream store has a strawberry cheesecake flavor with real chunks of strawberry. They have a bubble gum flavor with whole pieces of bubble gum that is my grandchildren’s favorite—yuck. Peanut butter chunk would have to be my favorite, and many times I have gone without if only chocolate is being served.
Amy says
I could not agree more with all of your top and bottoms!! I do NOT understand people who like strawberry ice cream. Mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and cookie dough are the BEST.
AA says
* Your faves are my faves, except I haven’t had peanut butter cookie dough. Interested because I feel the same way you do about regular cookie dough ice cream!
* For pistachio, I like Talenti brand pistachio gelato. (That’s my brand to buy from a grocery store!)
* If you’re ever in the Cincinnati, Ohio area (down through central KY), Graeter’s ice cream is great. (Sold in some stores, too).
* When I was a teenager, in a Cold Stone Creamery, I requested chocolate with marshmallow whip and almonds (folded in). I thought I was so creative! My friend said, “that’s just Rocky Road.”
Leah says
Top 5:
5. Vanilla
4. Molly Moons (local shop) Sweet Cream
3. Chocolate chip cookie dough
2. Molly Moons Cookies and Cream
1. Salt and Straws Birthday cake with blackberry
Bottom 5:
5. Chocolate
4. Mint chocolate chip
3. Cherry flavored
2. Coffee flavored
1. Anything with nuts in it.
Mix and Match Mama says
I feel like I need to get myself to Molly Moons!
Tera Knepp says
I’m with you- cookies & cream and mint chocolate chip are always winners! Have you tried snickerdoodle cookie dough? So good! And I agree on no to strawberry ice cream!
Connie says
I forgot the bottom five! Even though there are more.
#5-chocolate #4 butter pecan #3 chocolate chip #2 Any caramel, coffee, pineapple, peach, or mango (I like coffee in the morning and the fruit by itself only) #1 black cherry
Paula says
I am not an ice cream lover. My husband keeps buying me pints to find the holy grale for me….😂😂 If I do want a pint, Jeni’s ice cream has a wildberry lavender I absolutely love. And when I go to the beach, Marble Slab…I get either Cheese Cake ice cream with graham crackers & strawberries mixed in OR (more often) Swiss Chocolate with almonds and coconut mixed in.
My husband loves..
Butter Pecan
Cookie Dough
But honestly eats any flavor if handed a bowl & spoon…😂
Paige M. says
My top 2 faves Mint chocolate chip & cookies & cream and if an ice cream shop has mint Oreo it makes me very happy haha.
Michelle Parsons says
Blue bell cookies and cream is the best ice cream on earth. And I’m the only one in my family who loves mint chocolate chip too!
Anne says
When I saw your top pic, I thought it was What’s On My Plate. LOL. I thought YES we’re soul sisters.
Kay says
I am in my own universe-not an ice cream fan at all. Would much rather have baked goods! So I’m with you…if I ever eat ice cream, I want more “things” than ice cream. Also, ice cream is basically just a vehicle for eating hot fudge. So! if I have a ratio of 95% hot fudge to 5% ice cream I’m calling that a win. Mint chocolate chip and hot fudge is perfection. And I love a pink peppermint stick as well!
Faith says
Fruit and ice cream DO NOT go together unless it’s cherries on a sundae!
I think I need to try peanut butter cookie dough!!!!! I do love chocolate chip cookie dough.
Sorry…:can’t do mint and chocolate!
Ironically my favorite ice cream to get when I was younger was cherry vanilla.
Now I want ice cream in a homemade waffle cone!!
Mix and Match Mama says
A waffle cone is my favorite way to enjoy ice cream!
Janet Teeter says
If you like “stuff” in your ice cream, you need to try Ben and Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk! It has chunks of dark chocolate, white chocolate, pecans, etc all in a chocolate ice cream.
I’ve ever heard of coffee cake ice cream, who makes it?
Mix and Match Mama says
You had me at “stuff”.
sandi says
Lolly’s Creamery is a local ice cream shop that makes incredible ice cream. Our youngest daughter worked as an ice cream scooper there; they called their employees the JOY SQUAD. I am NOT a plain ice cream fan and do not know what they put in their chocolate ice cream, but it is hands down fantastic.
Top Five:
1/ Ben and Jerry’s New York Super Fudge
2/ Lolly’s Creamery Cookie Monster
3/ Noosa chocolate fudge frozen yoghurt
4/ Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food
5/ Graeter’s Mint Chip
Bottom Five:
1/ McConnell’s Eureka Lemon and Marionberries
2/ Noosa Lemon Bar Frozen Yoghurt
3/ Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia
4/ any ice cream with strawberries
5/ any plain vanilla ice cream
Mix and Match Mama says
Phish Food is really yummy!!
Ruby Huling says
I never deviate from ordering the mocha fudge almond from our Baskin Robbins, but I do love me some black walnut!
Mix and Match Mama says
That sounds really delish!
Rebecca Walker says
I think I’ve been living under a rock! I’ve never heard of peanut butter cookie dough before.
Beth Valenta says
I am not a huge ice cream fan, but definately mint chocolate chip but only the white kind. I love vanilla with the lil beans flecking in. My husband could live off cookies and cream, but I will eat one bite.
Casey says
Top Five:
1. Chocolate Peanut Butter (swirls, not Reese’s)
2. Chocolate Fudge Brownie
3. Toasted Coconut
4. Nutty Chocolate Sugar Cone (sadly HEB has discontinued this flavor)
5. Birthday Cake (specifically Blue Bell’s version)
Bottom Five:
1. Mint Chocolate Chip
2. Buttered Pecan
3. Vanilla
4. Sherbert
5. Rocky Road
Amy D. says
Top 5:
1) Birthday cake/funfetti/cake batter
2) Chocolate chip cookie dough/PB CC cookie dough
3) White turtle ice cream (vanilla ice cream with nuts and caramel)
4) Oreo/cookies & cream
5) Anything PB flavored
Bottom 5:
1) Chocolate
2) Rum Raisin
3) Pistachio
4) Rocky Road
5) Sherbet
Mix and Match Mama says
I feel like we have collectively decided that run raisin and pistachio just should stop being made…like yesterday.
Ari says
We have a local ice cream shop that makes random ice cream combinations but one of our faves and not so random is just plain cinnamon ice cream!! It’s soo good!! My other top pick would be the coffee lovers at Cold Stone, yum!!
Lauren says
I am from Saint Louis where we are famous for Gooey Butter Cake! It is deliciouuus and everyone should try it! Here is a recipe if you’d like to try: https://www.food.com/recipe/st-louis-style-gooey-butter-cake-195977
With that being said, Gooey Butter Cake ice cream is my fav, followed by Mint Chocolate Chip and anything with Heath (:
Emily says
If you love Cookie Dough and Cookies and Cream, you MUST try Cookie Two Step by Blue Bell. Hands down our family favorite. It’s the best of both! ❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
I feel like I need a gallon today!
Courtney Bozeman says
okay but wait, how come i have never heard of peanut butter cookie dough ice cream? what brand? where do i get?
Mix and Match Mama says
We buy it at The Juice Bar on Nantucket. It takes boring old cookie dough and makes it extra delicious!
Susan McKain says
Great topping…I mean, topic!
Bottom 5:
5. Sorbets
4. Sherbets
3. Birthday Cake flavor
2. Rum Raisin
1. Any overly-dyed, brightly colored flavor
Top 5:
5. Fresh Red Raspberry, with or without Oreo
4. Peanut Butter Ripple
3. Mint C.Chip, Mint Oreo, or the best – Green Monster from The Juice Bar – Creamy mint is so refreshing on a summer night.
4. Brown Butter Almond Brickle from Fox Meadows Creamery – Base is similar to a butter pecan & has huge pieces of toffee!
5. Tandy Kake from Fox Meadows Creamery – Wilbur chocolate ice cream with huge pieces of freshly baked PB Tandy Kake
Mix and Match Mama says
The raspberry with Oreos has me so intrigued!
Joanne says
Right there with you on the bottom 5 and while I like mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream, I don’t think they’d make it onto my top 5 but that’s because we have SO MANY flavors to pick from that I tend to like some pretty specific ones that aren’t always found everywhere. I love moose tracks (and most anything with peanut butter and chocolate), I love Maine black bear (or any flavor with raspberry and chocolate), Lobster tracks is another fabulous flavor (and no it has zero seafood in it I swear), cookie jar is another one of my favorites with chunks of peanut butter cup, Oreo, M&M’s, I think maybe even Kit Kats in there…
Kristin B says
But have you tried homemade strawberry ice cream at a strawberry farm?? Fantastic!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve never been to a strawberry farm!
Wendy L Crawford says
I feel like that should go on the front of a shirt…
Pistachio ice cream: It’s like biting into bland ice cream that has tiny rocks inside.
and this should go on the back…
Chocolate ice cream: At least Pistachio has little pebbles inside.
Perfect assessment on both!
🤣🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
I just lol!
Heather says
Please don’t base your opinion on Pistachio ice cream from Baskin Robbin’s…the Wegmans Premium Pistachio ice cream is the best thing ever! So incredibly creamy and the pistachios are not rock hard pebbles. I also love huckleberry ice cream whenever I’m in Montana.
Hannah says
I think its important to point out the different brands as well because objectively bluebell is by far the dominant ice cream in the industry 🤪🤪. (Specifically the cookie two step and the oatmeal cream pie) because there could be different ones from different brands that are better than others. Like the triple chocolate fudge gelato from talenti. Just my 2 cents 😁

Top 5 for me are Chocolate Peanut Butter (I prefer Haagen Daaz or Baskin Robbins); Mint Chocolate Chip; Rocky Road; Moose Tracks; and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
Bottom 5 are Pecan; Vanilla; anything Fruity; Sorbet anything; and anything with raisins.

Baskin Robbin’s has a seasonal flavor called Love Potion that is the best flavor.

In the summer…homemade peach ice cream from our fave peach farm stand in East Texas (Efurd Orchards) 🍑🥰
Also..Blue Bell…Southern Blackberry Cobbler. Oh my. The ice cream itself has a wonderful fresh blackberry flavor..there is a ribbon of blackberry sauce running through it too. But what makes it for me are the chunks of flaky pie crust throughout! 💜💜💜😋

One of mine and Tim’s biggest fights was around him continuously buying butter pecan ice cream. It’s old people ice cream. It makes me mad when I open the freezer and it’s in there.
Mix and Match Mama says
I am laughing out loud! I feel a kindred spirit that Tim and I are a little old at heart.
Deb says
I normally don’t like a lot of stuff in my ice cream bc I can’t taste the creamy deliciousness!

3. Chocolate chip
4. Hagen Dazz any flavor

Bottom
1. Butter pecan

Mix and Match Mama says
Okay, I have to know (as someone who isn’t an ice cream connoisseur), why Hagen Dazz?

Ben & Jerry’s Everything But… Vanilla and Chocolate ice creams with peanut butter cups, fudge-covered toffee pieces, white chocolatey chunks and fudge-covered almonds. Seriously, the BEST if you like a lot of stuff in every bite!
Mix and Match Mama says
YES, PLEASE!!!
Megan says
Its gluten free too!

Wait, curious to know the kids’ top and bottom preferences too…. What has Ashby tried and loved? Disliked? What are Kensington’s ‘go-to’s’ and least faves?
Mix and Match Mama says
Ashby is that fun person who will order anything and love it. When we go to The Juice Bar on Nantucket, she often gets whatever the special is just because it’s new and different. Kensington, obviously, has to stick to g-free choices, so when she orders, it’s almost always a vanilla ice cream with a topping like M&Ms.

I love that Andrew has Braums in the mix! I was born in Amarillo but moved to Houston later and we don’t have Braums here and I have withdrawals! Braun’s cappuccino chocolate chunk is the BEST ice cream. I went to college in Norman. OK (OU!) and so I got my fix there during those 4 years. Every time we go back up north somewhere I always stop there. I love it so much!
Sheaffer says
Okay.
Listen up, Lady.
Go to Braum’s,
Order Cappuccino Chunky Chocolate Frozen Yogurt in a waffle cone.
Prepare to amend your list.
Mix and Match Mama says
Literally no one could get me out of my office chair and over to Braum’s right now more than YOU.

I’m one that likes a lot of stuff in my ice cream too. Many good suggestions here but no one said Half Baked by Ben and Jerry’s!! If you like cookie dough at all you should like this – it’s regular cookie dough ice cream but it’s swirled with chocolate ice cream and brownie dough too. Sooooo good!!
My mom’s fav was always pistachio. I LOLkd at your comment about the tiny rocks. HA
Deena says
My favorites are chocolate in any form, maple walnut, coffee, chocolate chip or mint chocolate chip. Least are vanilla, strawberry, anything with caramel and/or raisins.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love a maple walnut!

“Bottom 5” may be my second favorite blog post section from you, Shay; they’re absolutely HILARIOUS. Second to book reviews, of course! Being that I’m in Pittsburgh and we experience all 4 seasons throughout the week, sometimes during a single day, I’ll have to wait until it’s warmer to dig into some ice cream! Fun topic today – thanks!

My grandpa loved Bluebell’s mint pistachio and butter pecan and I can’t stand them haha. I love Bluebell’s vanilla and Jeni’s brambleberry. Also coffee.
