It’s a THREE POST WEDNESDAY, friends! I’m partnering with Nordstrom and Collective Voice today and sharing a little Workout Wednesday (including an actual workout and some new fall workout wear!) and along with this post, Andrew is answering your SPINAL FUSION QUESTIONS plus, I’m also sharing my 20 MUST HAVE MAPLE RECIPES FOR FALL too!
Three posts, one day 🙂 .
I have been wanting to share a new strength training routine with you, and I thought what better way than to add one today while I also share my new running/walking shoes and some workout clothes to wear too from Nordstrom (SO MANY ON SALE!!).
From shorts to leggings and sneakers too, I’ve been trying to stay on top of my fitness routine while also looking cute and being comfortable…
…who doesn’t love leggings with side pockets?! My ZELLA STUDIO LEGGINGS are on sale right now in so many of the 10 colors they come in! These run TTS (I bought them in an xs) and are oh so comfy for working out or errands. I bought my ZELLA BREATHE ACTIVE TANK several years ago, and they’re still in stock today and many colors are on sale too!
My SPORTS BRA though is the most comfortable one I’ve ever owned. I’m not even exaggerating. It is SO CRAZY COMFY that I now want it in every color.
Let’s chat about my sneakers though…
…I bought my ASICS on the left 18+ months ago and love them so much that I also bought them to keep on Nantucket too. I’m typically really good at changing out my running/walking shoes every six months or so for my back and feet health, but these still felt so great that I continued wearing them EVERY DAY. Just two weeks ago, I finally bought myself a new pair…
…because every time I went out for a walk or run, my toes would come through the tips 🙂 . You guys, THAT IS HOW MUCH I ADORE THESE SNEAKERS!
Of course, I bought another pair of ASICS as the replacement sneaker. They’re comfy, they don’t rub my feet, they have tremendous support, and clearly, they last!
I keep these in the closet next to my front door…
…so that I can easily grab them and put them on each day but…
…I have even been lifting with them on too!
Also please note something else. I shared my CURRENT HAIR ROUTINE last week but failed to mention this…
…I have been wearing THESE SILK SCRUNCHIES when I lift weights or run/walk outside every day to keep my hair from creasing. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! I now also wear them when I’m washing my face, taking a bath…basically anytime I want my hair to stay looking fresh without adding that dreaded rubber band crease.
Don’t forget, so many of these items are also perfect for your current workout routine and many are on sale right now at Nordstrom too…
I love MY TANK with this cute pair of Dri-Fit NIKE SHORTS! I love any pair of running shorts that are lined and comfy. I thought the color of these shorts were super cute, but they also come in 8 other colors too and many are on sale!
I also paired it with…
…this Dri-Fit SPORTS BRA! It’s comfy and the straps are SO CUTE!!
So cute! It comes in SEVEN DIFFERENT COLORS as well!
Okay, if you’re looking for a new strength training routine to do at the gym or at home, Andrew wrote me up a new one to share:
Below you’ll exercises grouped by twos. Do one set of each and then repeat until you’ve done three sets of both exercises and then move on to the next group. This is a great “all over” strength session. If you have any questions, let me know! Use whichever weights you’re comfortable with right now with your existing routine:
Bicep curl 3×12
Barbell bench press 15, 10, 8
Barbell squat 3×15
Seated incline fly 3×12
Standing 45 degree bicep curl 3×15
Barbell hip raise (pause and hold for 2 seconds at the top) 3×15
Dumbbell two arm row (palms up) 15, 12, 8
Rear delt cable flys (or use a band) 3×10
One arm military press 12, 10, 8
Triceps dips 3×8
Triceps cable overhead extension 3×15
Delt raises 15, 12, 10
1 minute plank in pushup position
1 minute plank on each side (two minutes total)
I hope you try it too! I did it just yesteray!
Okay, one more thing from Nordstrom I wanted to share because oh I love it so much…
…how adorable are my PAJAMAS?! I am such a pajama person and this super soft set comes in 10 different prints and patterns (many on sale!) and run TTS. I just feel so much more put together with a cute pair of matching pjs. Anyone else?
…the next morning, it works so well with my beloved (oh so beloved!) ROBE too 🙂 .
And don’t forget…
… these PAJAMAS come in so many different patterns and are on sale right now too!
THIS CUTE SET is perfect if you prefer shorts!
A little workout wear, an actual workout and pjs!
Don’t forget, Andrew is answering your SPINAL FUSION QUESTIONS and then I’m also sharing my 20 MUST HAVE MAPLE RECIPES FOR FALL too.
As always, you know that Nordstrom is my go-to for so many finds! I always love shopping there because not only do they have everything my family needs from beauty to shoes to home, clothes, bath and more, but they have impeccable service, free shipping, free returns, and curbside pick up (all so handy for the busy lady!). You can catch all of their services (including alterations, gift wrapping, style help and more HERE!).

I’m tempted to try those shoes after my current ones are done. I haven’t worn ASICS since high school cheerleading and they were indeed comfy!
Now that you’re working out harder and building more muscle, is the scale going up for you? I’ve heard my whole life that muscle weighs more than fat, ignore the scale, etc., but I’ve been working out with my husband like those reps you listed above and the scale won’t stop adding! I keep telling myself it’s just muscle, but mid-40s, you know…I just don’t want to get to where I gain without realizing it and then have a lot I need to lose (that crept up) for my health one day. Does that make sense? It makes it hard to keep wanting to lift. And I’m not noticing any difference in how clothes fit, what I look like, etc. I THINK it’s just muscle, but it’s kinda messing with my mind, you know?! I’d love to hear if anyone has had the same experience.

So, the last time I was weighed was when I applied for additional life coverage in the spring, and it was really about my normal. I don’t weigh myself often. I have always gone by the way my clothes fit/feel on me. I’ve listened to podcasts that discuss the “muscle weighs more than fat” topic, and I’m probably going to butcher this, but it seems like yes that’s true but muscle burns calories and revs the metabolism where fat does not…so I just don’t worry about it. I’ve personally changed my goal. I want to be healthy longer and live well. That’s my new goal 🙂 .

I’m also new to the lifting world, but my gym had an “onboarding” process where I got an “InBody” scan. It showed me the exact percentage of my muscle, fat, water, and bones (hahahah, why do BONES gross me out?). I’m excited to keep consistent for a few months and going back to see how these percentages have changed.
Maybe find somewhere in your area with one of those machines and do a comparison between now and 3 or 6 months from now? I would just search “body composition scan.” I think they even have some scales that you can buy with this, but I doubt they’re as precise as one at a gym or doc’s office.

Thanks! I’ve thought about that. We do have one at our gym, I just wish I had done it before I first started! I might go ahead and do it anyway and maybe still see some progress?

Hey Shay, former D1 runner and huge ASICS fan here! In college we were always taught by our strength trainer never to wear our running shoes while lifting because the cushion in the shoes actually impacts our form and can lead to back issues. I now lift in either super flat shoes (my go to is the Nike Pegasus, a pair I would never run in because I prefer cushion and arch support!), or barefoot (my preferred option!). Love this post and wishing you many happy miles in your ASICS!

So many good posts today! I love the positive attitude you both have. Like Andrew said in the other post, so many people are going through hard things and it’s all about perspective.
I know you have shared before but what is your cardio routine like?

Hi Shay! I just wanted to take a minute to say I love this post (and your blog in general), the fact that you post workouts, what’s on your plate, and the way you talk about health and wellness in general. I’m glad the internet has your voice.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well goodness, thank YOU for encouraging me with your kind words. xx

I own a running store and we see holes occur at the toe with a lot of people. We call it “hitchhiker toe” and it’s just the way your big toes lift up when you move. If you want to avoid those holes peeking through, you can put some moleskin on the inside of your shoe. It really helps! I love me some ASICS and I’m glad you’re loving yours. 🙂

I love the deep neutrals in that first outfit!
