Happy Wednesday, friends!
It’s another edition of LET’S LOOK!
If you don’t know what this is, once a month, Erika and I do a little link up where we “look” at different aspects of our lives (and then if you blog, you share and link up too!). We have been doing this little linky party for years now, and it’s always one of my favorite posts each month because most of the topics are YOUR suggestions!
So far in 2023, here’s what we’ve “looked at”…
In January, we looked at HOW WE ORGANIZE FOR THE NEW YEAR.
In February, we looked inside OUR MEDICINE CABINETS.
In March, we looked at our ALL TIME FAVE AMAZON FINDS .
In April, we looked at MY PET PEEVES.
And today, we’re LOOKING AT MY MORNING ROUTINE.
Now, as a reminder, my morning routine is UBER important to me which is why last year…
…I shared my 25 KEYS TO A PEACEFUL MORNING.
You really need to go back and read (or maybe re-read!) THAT POST to see how and why my family thrives on a peaceful morning. We eliminate several things and incorporate a few more. You guys, if my morning doesn’t start off peaceful, my entire day is off. It’s so special to me to have a calm, cozy and peaceful morning.
Since I’ve already shared the deets on my complete morning routine, I thought today I would share A DAY IN THE LIFE of my morning.
On Monday, I documented my morning to share with you.
Here we go…
Rise and shine 🙂 . It’s time to immediately head…
…for coffee.
Next up, I headed upstairs with coffee in tow to…
…do my quiet time and enjoy my Bible Recap.
I also did a little reading on this morning and came across a quote (author unknown) that I loved. I wrote it down in my prayer journal too. The quote is “The goal at the end of one’s life is to have memories rather than dreams.”. Wow! I just love that so much!
After my coffee and quiet time, I headed downstairs…
…to get dressed for a hot workout class.
5:01 AM and I’m about to walk out the door. On this day, I talked sweet Erika into going with me! We were so busy chatting in the car at 5:10 AM that I forgot to take any pics. Boo. We drove there together, worked out, I dropped her off at home and then headed back to my house…
…to say good morning to my kiddos and make everyone a quick breakfast of turkey bacon…
…and scrambled eggs.
Good morning to my littlest loves…
…and good morning to my biggest love (who goes to high school next year!!)…and…
…good morning to this man who now lives here (where did my little boy go?!).
Me: Smith, can I take your picture?
Smith: You can take one of me inside the refrigerator getting my lunch.
Me: Okay.
And that’s life with a 13 year old boy 🙂 .
Good morning, Mr. Shull! He was off to do cardio upstairs (and yes, he’d already been to the grocery store that morning 😉 ).
Time for the three of us to head to school!
After the littles went to school, I headed…
…up to my office with my second cup of coffee…
…I sat down and began some work…
…I turned on my favorite music for working and then after a bit, it was time…
…to head downstairs and make my bed…
…and then…
…I showered. On this day, instead of heading back up to work the rest of the day, I headed out to the Uhaul to start packing up our things to to take to Nantucket! You guys, it’s time to get our things from Texas to Nantucket so that when we show up there this summer, we have beds to sleep on and dishes to eat off of! We’re so excited over here! The first step is done! We loaded everything up we have for the new home into a Uhaul. The second step? You have to head to my Stories today to see what that is.
In the meantime…that’s a morning in my life 🙂 .
Next month, in JUNE (hello, summer!), we’re going to take a look at OUR BEST TRAVEL TIPS!
Okay, spill the beans, what’s one part of your morning routine you absolutely love. I would LOVE to know!
Comment and share!
If you also blogged Let’s Look, make sure you link up below.
Have a wonderful Wednesday! xx

Up at 5 I head for coffee & Bible to spend time in the Word!! My favorite part of my day!!
Laura says
Yay! I was excited when I saw this post was coming up because, thanks to you, I often have a 4:30/5am start time to my day now! After years of reading this blog I finally tested out the early wakeup and wow I can really get more done when the house is quiet!! It’s almost like you were right all along haha! My favorite parts of my routine are picking out my mug of the morning, making time to incorporate the Bible back into my life, feeling more caught up on work, and not being so irritable when my kids wake up (lol).
(PS, your IT thing seems resolved and I was able to read this at my normal time this morning!)
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay!!!! Laura, I’m so happy you’re an early riser now too. Isn’t it just the best time of day? I love it so very much!
Sarah Nienhuis says
Piggybacking on the comment I left for you yesterday, one of my favorite morning routines is sitting down with my coffee to read your blog! (And Andrea’s and Ericka’s)
I am very excited to watch your Nantucket house adventures coming up 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwwww! Sarah, THANK YOU!!! That just means so much to me!
Becky Simpson says
My favorite routine is that my husband will cook me breakfast every day. This started when he was working from home during the height of Covid, but it has since continued.
Jill says
but the big question is…when do you brush your teeth? 😛
Mix and Match Mama says
I just lol! You know me, I’ve brushed my teeth at least three times by 10:00 AM. Hahahaha!
Katie says
THIS reply made me LOL. This is something we have in common. I am self labeled and admitted teeth brushing addict. I brush my teeth an obscene amount of times per day – with zero plans of stopping I might add. HAHA.
Mix and Match Mama says
Zero plans. I love having clean teeth!
Sheaffer says
I’m SO EXCITED for y’all!!! Can’t wait to see pics!
Erika Slaughter says
EEEEKKKK!!!! You guys are getting so close!!
Kelli says
Eeeeek!!! I’m so excited about all of the Nantucket content this summer!
My early morning routine is SACRED! I agree that the whole day is off when I stray from it. Happy Wednesday!
Lisa D says
I love that quote about having “memories rather than dreams”. I am encouraged to live out my dreams. Thx for being a positive light to the blog readers.
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved it too! As soon as I read it, I wrote it down.
MelanieL says
Awe, love this and we relate on so many things and you’ve showed me many ways to be a better version of myself BUT that picture of Smith is the most relatable right now, LOL! I’m mom to a 17 year old boy…:)
Such a fun moving day(s) for you, hoping all goes safely and smoothly!
Cheila says
Random question but how do you take your coffee?
Mix and Match Mama says
Pretty boring…typically a little bit of cream and a Truvia.
sandi says
I walk with a neighbor between 6-7 AM which is (for now) a fresh, crisp way to begin the day. Unfortunately 7-7:35 is a blur as I rush to shower, get ready for work and get the youngest to school. Fortunately, I handed off breakfast duties to the kids as soon as they could reach the stove, so the youngest (9th grade) empties the dishwasher and fixes her own breakfast on school days. It will be humid outside soon enough, but for now the crisp air is a great way to wake up.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love that you walk with a neighbor first thing in the morning!
SS says
Shay,
Smith reminds me so much of our boys at that age. Lol.
I LOVE that quote. I am always writing down good quotes!!! It actually made me think of Tom McGraw’s newest song Standing Room Only. If you haven’t heard it.. you need to check it out.
Have fun moving and settling into your new place! Shull’s Summer Sabbatical.. Lol!!!
MELISSA says
I’m curious if you have any evening routines that set you up for a successful morning?
Mix and Match Mama says
Ohhhh that would be a fun blog post too!
Whitney says
Me too! Reading your blog is one of my favorite things to do in the morning 🙂 can’t wait to read all about Nantucket!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my word, thank you, thank you! You are too sweet!!
Beth Valenta says
My best part is 10 minutes with coffee, candle, and soft music in the kitchen. I pack up my lunch and set off to school by 6:30. I also stop to get coffee each morning and go by my daughter’s house to bring her coffee. We get to chat for a quick 5 minutes about our plans and off I go to school. This will change during my summer off, but it is my bright spot each morning.
Mix and Match Mama says
I got cozy just reading this comment, Beth!
Krissy says
That quote is great! I’d love to know where your green shorts are from? 😊
Mix and Match Mama says
Vuori! https://shopstyle.it/l/bV6eA

Love reading your blog each morning! I’m looking to get a new Apple Watch, can you share which one you have?
Mix and Match Mama says
I have the 7! You can read my review here: https://mixandmatchmama.com/2021/11/apple-watch-series-7-review/
Hope says
I am awakened at 5 am daily by Molly the beagle for her breakfast. Sometimes she starts asking for it even earlier but I hold out until 5. The coffee maker is preset to brew and I have my first cup of coffee and check my email, read blogs and if I have time I check some social media. I get ready for work, make my bed, put in a load of laundry and set the timer to wash just before I get home and lastly I start the dishwasher if necessary. I throw my lunch in a bag and head to work.
I’m excited to read some Nantucket content soon. How do the big kids feel about missing their friends over the summer?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay! Thank you for letting me be a part of your morning! Spending extra time on Nantucket was a group decision…in fact, the kiddos lead the way in the conversation especially when we left last summer. They’re really excited, but I will be honest and say that Kensington does have some moments of hesitation. We’re not moving, we’re just spending bonus time in our favorite location, so these moments are few and far between. She’s already talking about getting a job there next summer, so we’ll see? We’re taking it one moment at a time and right now, they’re excited.
kimberlee S nelson says
Love the early morning wake ups! Great way to get the day started. Question, love the mug your “second” cup of coffee is in. Can you please link it? Thanks so much and can’t wait to see all the Nantucket photos!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a Swig that I bought from Amazon a few years ago. I love Swig mugs for coffee.
Jen says
I have fallen in love with Swigs in the last year and now have my son hooked on them! We love them for hot and cold drinks and have started a collection, because the patterns are too cute to choose!😄 Have loved reading your blog for as long as I can remember & those beautiful babies sure don’t keep! Can’t wait to see all things Nantucket!!💖
K.K. says
I love the “morning in the life”!! So fun, Shay!! Can’t wait to hear more about Nantucket!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you!!!
Crystal says
Your coffee looks so delicious, what coffee machine is that? Been looking for a really good one to invest in since coffee is an important part of my day. Totally trust your recommendations because I know you love coffee too. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a Jura! We’ve had it now for four years and love it. It makes so many incredible coffee beverages.
Julie Harris says
I love a good morning routine too and find that my whole day is off when it gets disturbed. Observation: do you think that Kensington looks just like Andrew’s mom? I noticed it in the picture of everyone on FB about what time is the grandparents favorite time of day, but think the picture above shows it too. Beautiful girls:-)
Mix and Match Mama says
I do think she looks like her!!
Anna Chavez says
Heading to Nantucket this 4th of July for my first time. After reading your blog I am getting more excited to experience the island and make some memories rather than dreams!
Heather says
Can you share where you bought your bedspread?
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course! I bought it here: https://www.easternaccents.com
Jen says
Love the morning time! I hope the Slaughters are planning on spending some time in Nantucket this summer with y’all too! You can’t be away that long from Erika!
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
Wait, who’s the beautiful teenager in your kitchen?! HOW did that happen! Wasn’t Kensington a little girl wearing a big bow just last month? 🥰
I’m so excited to follow along with your Nantucket Summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s just terrible, right?! She’s about three inches taller than me too now. Where did that baby go?!
Kara says
Reading your blog is one of the first things I do when I get to work before I start seeing patients! It’s my few moments of peace 😊 I think we are all excited for Nantucket content this summer-such a sweet adventure for your family!! Thanks for sharing!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay! Kara, thank YOU so very much!!
Maryellen Reimers says
I love the look of your bedding! Do you have favorites (sheets/comforters/duvet etc)? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
I only use Lands End flannel sheets in white (they’re AMAZING!), and then all of my blankets are from Pottery Barn and my bedspread is from: https://www.easternaccents.com
hayley beck says
Did the kids get to send a few of their favorite items in the Uhaul to meet them in the new place too?
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course! They’ll bring their favorite items that they don’t want to part with on the individual trips over too.
Joanne says
I can’t believe your grocery stores are open that early! Ours don’t open until 7 or even 8 depending on the chain/brand…and my boys still all live in the pantry or refrigerator which is why I know the schedule of ALL the local grocery stores! LOL
Mix and Match Mama says
Our favorite store opens every day at 6:00!
Charmin says
Love your “A day in the life” posts. Have you/would you do a post on what chores or responsibilities you have for your kids, at what ages, allowances or no, etc… I think would be a good thing for parents that need some ideas. Thanks! You are my hero! You are the Energizer bunny!
Mix and Match Mama says
I *think* Erika and I mention this in an upcoming podcast episode. I should totally do a blog post too! I’ll write that down! Thank you!
Meredith says
I read your blog every morning, Shay! You’ve encouraged me to wake up earlier, and I’m loving it! I wake up now around 5:20, grab coffee, do my morning Bible study and spend time with Jesus, and wake the kids up at 6:45 to start getting ready for school. I feel so much better, and actually crave that extra hour and a half in the mornings with the quiet house!
Mix and Match Mama says
This is the best comment ever! Thank you so much for sharing this with me!! Enjoy your morning time! xx
Sarah says
Good luck with the move to Nantucket! When you are up here this summer, if you come off the island for any reason, you should check out Duke’s Bakery in Fall River! It’s a gluten-free bakery with a breakfast and lunch menu. It’s amazing! My son and I have celiac and I love bringing him there and telling him he can have whatever he wants. It’s about 20 minutes from the New Bedford Ferry Terminal.
Shelby Davis says
Kensington’s hair looks so good in her picture! ♥️
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! Thank you!
Cathy says
Can you link the specific quilted blanket and bedspread?
Mix and Match Mama says
Let me look! It’s several years old.
Marie says
What time are you doing to bed to get up so early?
Mix and Match Mama says
Typically around 10 or 10:15.
