’tis Tuesday, friends!
I hope you’re in the Christmas spirit today because it’s time for another edition of TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE…and it’s “holiday” related 🙂 .
If you’ll recall, so far, we’ve shared our (very spirited!!) TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CHRISTMAS MOVIES and our TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CHRISTMAS SONGS (seriously, super spirited in the comment section, hahaha!). In keeping with the December tradition, today’s post is yet again “holiday related”.
Today, I’m sharing my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE HOLIDAY THINGS.
A disclaimer…
I do not want to get in to the weeds here about the actual holiday of Christmas as IT IS SO IMPORTANT AND THERE IS NOTHING “BOTTOM” ABOUT THE BIRTH OF JESUS. This is not about “Christmas”. For me, Christmas has ONE TOP and zero bottoms…Jesus. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is that entire blog post. This is not that post. This is light/funny/real life stuff about the Top Five, Bottom Five “things” this holiday season produces outside of the birth of Jesus and the actual holiday of Christmas. Make sense? I hope so. Because let’s be real, as much as I love December 25th, there are a few other tasks surrounding it that I do not enjoy. Thus, this post.
Here we go…
TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: HOLIDAY THINGS
#5: IT’S IN THE AIR
I don’t exactly know what it is, but there is something about this time of year that is just “in the air”.
I mean, often, it’s literal. I’ll step outside and smell the smoke from my neighbor’s fireplaces or the air just smells crisp and cold and like leaves on the ground…or I’ll walk into Trader Joe’s or my grocery store and they’ll have displays of spices and cinnamon up front that just smell like this season.
Sometimes, it’s not literal, but it just “feels” different. Whether I’m at my kids’ schools or Starbucks, there is this holly jolly vibe that just seems to be everywhere. I just love the “feeling” that seems to follow me around this time of year. It’s cozy and warm and inviting and comforting.
#4: COZY NIGHTS IN WITH PEOPLE I LOVE
I love me a dark and cozy night with the fireplace going and candles lit surrounded by either my hubby and kids…or with family and/or friends. I don’t care if it’s casual and we’re in our comfy clothes watching a movie or hosting a little party…I just love a cozy night in with people. I know I can do this more often than just the holiday season, but there is something extra amazing about doing it with the tree up and the garland hung. It’s my very favorite way to be with the ones I love.
#3: LIGHTS AND DECOR
I love Christmas lights and decorations. I do not care if I’m at the auto mechanic waiting for my oil to be changed or if I’m at the mall, if I see a tree and a strand of lights, I’M EXCITED. I love lights on homes, on businesses, at Starbucks, on the trees around town…I love lights and holiday decorations on anything. I truly get giddy every single time. I just think the world might be a better place if we kept the lights and decorations up year around 🙂 .
#2: THE SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS
All of the sounds. I love the music. I love the movies. I love Mariah and Bing. I love listening to the same old songs and holiday movies again and again. It’s nostalgic. It’s familiar. It’s cozy. It’s home. When Nat says “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”, I don’t care if it’s the 893rd time I’ve heard it, it makes me feel warm inside.
#1 FAMILY TRADITIONS
As you know, I’m not into traditions that no longer serve my family (because some simply do not), but I absolutely ADORE any tradition that brings us all together, makes us sentimental and allows us to spend quality time together. From Jammy Cocoa Christmas to our annual carriage ride, dinner at certain favorite spots and watching holiday movies together, the time I spend with Andrew, Kensington, Smith, Ashby, and Madeley is my very very very favorite part about the holiday season.
So, those are my TOP FIVE, but what about my…
#5: CHRISTMAS CARDS
I just do not love sending out Christmas cards. I know, I know, I know…I don’t have to. I can quit anytime I want. I know this…but for whatever reason, I’ve yet to do it, so I’m just going to complain about it instead. I don’t love updating addresses, licking envelopes, buying stamps, paying for cards I know people will just end up throwing away. I get a whole lot of joy out of many things…Christmas cards though? Not so much.
#4: MY MESSY HOUSE
It’s so messy. I don’t like mess. I like tidy and neat and orderly and clean and well, right this minute, there are boxes on the floor that need to be opened, wrapping paper rolls propped up against the wall, candy everywhere (literally everywhere), about 45 Christmas projects Mades has brought home from school sitting on every surface, Ashby’s cocoa is on the counter…agh! I’m too Type-A for all of this “stuff”. I love it. Jingle Jangle is magical. I buy it and enjoy it, but I’m also happy that this season is short because I couldn’t live with all of this superfluous overflowing holiday paraphernalia year around.
#3: LONG LINES EVERYWHERE
I don’t love a line. I don’t like long lines especially at my “regular” places where I normally don’t have to wait…Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, restaurants in town, and for the love, HOBBY LOBBY and TARGET. My holiday spirit starts to dwindle as I stand in the Target line and see that they indeed have 20 cashier spots but only one is open for the 589 people ready to check out.
#2: WRAPPING, WRAPPING, WRAPPING
Hi, my name is Shay, and I just don’t love wrapping gifts. My mom always brings over beautifully gift wrapped packages complete with homemade bow and in return, I hand her a package that looks like it was wrapped by a drunk ferret. I just do not care about things that are immediately torn and thrown away…like wrapping paper. I know I should care more, but I just do not. Guess what else I don’t love? I despise wrapping paper that is glittery. It gets all over the floor, my hands, my clothes, my couch…come August there will still be glitter remaining from some glittery box. I don’t love any of it.
#1 OPENING BOXES (AND DISPOSING OF THEM)
I just do not love anything about opening boxes, breaking down boxes and disposing of alllllllll the boxes in my one recycle bin (the city should really pass out extra recycle bins this time of year!). I don’t love opening the door and seeing that the special awesome gift I bought a child is ON THE BOX so not only do I have a big box to deal with, I must quickly hide it somewhere before said child sees it. Boxes wear me out. I get lazy sometimes and just stack them in the garage which makes the house seem messy (please see #4 above) and makes Andrew testy. Boxes are just the worst.
The above quote COULD NOT BE MORE TRUE.
And on that note…
…itt wouldn’t be a TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE without Andrew weighing in too.
ANDREW’S TOP FIVE:
5: DINNERS AND PARTIES WITH FRIENDS
4: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. MY PARENTS ALWAYS DID THIS WITH US GROWING UP, AND I STILL LOVE IT.
3: CHRISTMAS MOVIES
2: COLD WEATHER AND SNOW
1: FAMLY TIME, THE KIDS ARE OUT OF SCHOOL
now for his…
ANDREW’S BOTTOM FIVE:
5: I HAVE NOTHING FOR #4 AND #5, CHRISTMAS IS AWESOME!
4: SEE ABOVE
3: I’M EXHAUSTED BY THE END.
2: I LOVE GIVING PRESENTS, BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM RECEIVING THEM. I DON’T LIKE THE SPOTLIGHT ON ME.
1: PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. USUALLY, I HAVE TO FOCUS ON THE TREE, BUT I GOT LUCKY THIS YEAR!

Addy Robinson says
Spot on, Shay!!! I would add, stressing about packages arriving. Both to me and all the ones I send out to loved ones who we won’t be seeing. It seems every delivery service has become less reliable and I don’t like tracking things and having anxiety about my gifts arriving in time!
Elspeth says
I love all the traditions that come with Christmas, from the baking to the gift buying, and holiday movies and scents. I don’t like all the emails from things you ordered online and all the excess stuff. But it is my favorite time of year!

Susan Jeffries says
I love Christmas too, but this year our only daughter has been working in a different state. She hasn’t been able to be here for the season. It has been really difficult but we are focusing on the real reason for the season – Jesus! And He is filling our lives with wonderful ways we can give back to others. That helps a lot(:
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Susan, you are so dear to me here in this community. Sending you SO MUCH LOVE this season!!
Amy Heinl says
Can’t wait to read the responses you get today. Here are mine:
Best:
5. Shopping for gifts…I love focusing on the people I love and choosing something special just for them. I kinda search all year long but never as much as during this season
4. Decorating for Christmas…I start on Halloween or the day after and it’s one of my most favorite days of the year
3. Christmas music….love the sounds of Christmss that play everywhere
2. Christmas movies….nothing better than the fireplace, christmss lights and Hallmark on the TV
1. Extra time with my family and friends…all the little extra get together and traditions give me more time with the ones I love
Worst:
5. Wishing I could do more….I always try to do something each year for a local family in need. It brings me such joy but always wish I had all the money in the world so I could help more than just the one
4. Grouchy Bah Humbug people….I hate when I run into them and wish I could wave a magic wand to change them.
3. Too short…even though I decorate early and I leave mine up till the end of January (don’t judge)…..always wish it was longer
2. The house after you put all the Christmas decorations away….just seem plain and I miss all the sparkle
1. Missing the people who are no longer with us….always a melancholy moment
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
K.K. says
I’m 100% with you on your top list!! Ha ha!
A drunk ferret?!! Ah ha ha… Shay, you made me fall out of my chair on that one!
Kelly M Sites says
I hate the Target situation as well- ONE lane open for people with carts full. Why? I also dislike wrapping and know people will just rip into gifts, so why put a ton of energy into it? I love putting gifts in a gift bag 🙂 I love lights on houses! I love a cold blustery day with reading by the fire. I love that it gets dark by 5:30 so we can get cozy and relax. In the summer I do NOT relax- I want to enjoy every minute of the long, sunny day. But winter- get me in my Pjs by 5 and on the couch.
Deann says
Christmas cards can seem like a chore, but so sweet to watch your kiddos grow through the years! Merry Christmas!
Katie Compton says
Hi… another drunken ferret here! Lol! I am a total wrapping Grinch. Two things that have saved me over the years:
1. These beautiful reusable bags!
https://www.qvc.com/giftmate-60-piece-holiday-value-set%3A-30-gift-bags-%26-30-tags.product.H486597.html
2. Our local high school’s track team does a wrapping fundraiser every year where talented, polite and friendly teens wrap all my presents!! No charge, but donations are accepted. I drop off my pile, run a few errands, then come back to beautiful packages that are loaded up into my car!! I look forward to it every year, especially when I see some of my former 2nd graders! Who, let’s face it, could have wrapped better than me when they were actually in my class! Ha!
Mix and Match Mama says
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Gail says
Wrapping fundraisers can get ALL of my money – that is a job I am thrilled to outsource!!
Kristen says
Best thing is the music!
The worst thing is the wrapping!
*Looking at all your cards I have to say your hair looks good blonde but I love the darker color you have now!!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you 😉
Carly says
Outside of Christmas card (they bring me such joy!) your bottom 5 is SO. REAL. THE BOXES. Makes it almost worth going to the mall and battling the lines. Glitter wrapping paper? Illegal. The. Mess. I LOVE a decorated house but there is stuff literally everywhere!! I love December but I also love January 9th when everything is put away and my cleaning fairies have just finished.
Kelli says
A drunk ferret 😂
Pamela says
I agree with you. However, the #1 bottom 5 for me is definitely taking down all decorations and packing away. I am happy when it is done and my home is back to “normal “ but just hate doing it 🤣
bette says
fall is my most favorite season, but christmas is my most favorite time of year.

Mix and Match Mama says
We are two peas in a pod 🙂 .
Mandie says
Friend: I give you permission to not send the Christmas card. In this digital age, I wish we could all agree to just post a mock-up of our card on social media and be done! I have t sent any in years and it is FREEING!! Not to mention a huge cost savings and stressor that I don’t need in my life!
Kristin says
I think the only thing keeping me doing Christmas cards is the fact that I love getting them from people. Buuuuut, because our son got married on Nov 26, I haven’t even bought my cards yet!!!! Yikes. I am in trouble. I love these top 5 bottom 5s!!
Mix and Match Mama says
But what a blessing to add to your holiday season!!
Kristin says
Oh, totally!! It was the best!!
Laci says
YES to allll of this!! The boxes with the logo and I am scrambling to hide it. Wrapping…enough said. But my goodness I love Christmas in the “air”…and lights and trees!
Vivian G says
I love everything Christmas. Wish it could last longer, it goes by so fast. No holiday home tour this year Shay?
Mix and Match Mama says
Me too!! Why does it go by so quickly and Augusts last 158 days?! Holiday Home Tour still to come!
Laura Fredlund says
I LOVE your lists! Same. I am sad there’s only two weeks left. I realized years ago that “feeling” we love so much is the LIGHT of Christ. So beautiful. For a living, my husband owns a Christmas lighting business. It is so incredibly busy this time of year for him and myself, being in charge of doing the custom lights on huge wreaths and garlands. We love Christmas so much, it’s quite fun that we even had our 4th baby born on Christmas morning and he’s about to have his 2nd birthday. Due on the 30th, but my water broke after I went to bed on Christmas Eve 😂. Can’t make this stuff up. Merry Christmas, enjoy enjoy!!❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my goodness! So much JOY in this one comment! Enjoy these last few weeks. I’m sad it’s almost over too.
Lindi says
This year I’m thinking about those who struggle in this season. It’s not festive, it’s forlorn. It’s not cozy, it’s depressing. Because of tragedies that have happened in this season or sorrowful memories, this season can be horrendous. I’m more aware than ever this year because of people around me. I know some would rather go to sleep in November and wake up in March.
Shay, you bring light things to the blog world. I know you aim to promote upbeat things. That’s admirable. I wonder if we could pray for those who feel like the twinkle lights only magnify the dark?
We know Jesus is the Light.
Mix and Match Mama says
100%!
Lisa D says
I’m praying!
Hard season for me this year. I am missing my Dad who passed away last January. At times it doesn’t feel very merry this year. But service to others always helps on the emotional days. Shay, thanks for being a bright light for so many every season, not just Christmas. God bless
🎄
Denise says
I too do not like wrapping gifts, so last year I declared to myself that I will never wrap another gift and it will be gift bags from here on out.
Happy Holidays
Kay says
This post is so fun! I totally agree with you on Christmas cards. This year, as my three teens basically refuse to pose for photos, I decided not to do one. I meant it! I told them it was cancelled. I literally created a card layout on Shutterfly with terrible pictures of them and pretended that was the one I was using so they would feel bad and pose for a good one. They laughed hysterically and came to the conclusion I should actually use the terrible one bc it was so funny. Spoiler alert, they did not feel bad and offer to pose for a good one.
Anyway, I somehow ended up pulling a ton of photos from the year (as opposed to one with us formally together) and it looked cute enough that I ordered it! Whyyyyyyyy? I am my own worst enemy!!!!
I ordered an envelope “sealer” off Amazon this year. I literally don’t know what that is. But it must help seal envelopes? Lol? So maybe that will help make part of the process better? Ugggggh.
Lastly, the DAY AFTER I ordered and paid for cards, I got a super cute photo of us all together at a local holiday market in Boston. Yup. No one will ever, ever see that super cute and festive photo. SIGH.
Happy Holidays to you and your family, Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh no!!! Kay! SIGH IS RIGHT!!!!
MelanieL says
Kay, this made me laugh so hard! We took what I thought was the best photo of us with a self timer on the balcony of our fall cabin rental in Gatlinburg with the mountains in the back, etc…SO GOOD! Buuut…my people (teens) hate it, lol, so it’s getting printed off for grandparents and given on Christmas instead of blasted out on Christmas cards. SIGH. 🙂
Candace A Young says
I agree with ALL of these… but you left out one big for me…the TRAFFIC 🤪
Debbra Weber says
My boss just came into my office wondering why I was laughing so hard. Your drunk ferret comment killed me–hilarious!! Love it!
Michelle P. says
I am so with you especially about the wrapping. OMG your comment about your gifts looking like they were wrapped by a drunk ferret has me laughing out loud here at work. I love this season, the lights, the meaning even giving gifts, but not the wrapping! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Lisa N says
Love your list! I agree about the wrapping, ugh lol Let me help you out in a small way. Stick your rolls of gift wrap in a pair of Hunter boots. Cute and organized;) I saw this on a catalog (probably Pottery Barn) years ago and have been doing it ever since. Merry Christmas 🎄
Ginger Butz says
Oh my gosh – you read my mind. I have the exact same bottom 5. Chaos be gone!!!! 🙂
Beth Valenta says
I always love these posts! TOP 5: fires with a Christmas movie, the countdown of days…I give my daughter a gift each day until Christmas istead of watching her open all at once, I can enjoy a special moment and she enjoys it during the month, parties with friends, a special drink that I would not normally have like eggnog, and traditions, we always go to a local Chinese restaurant on Christmas, and just so fun.
Bottom 5: Grocery store manners, please pretend you are driving and stay in your lane, having to explain to my husband 10 times that you need to order the gifts NOW, and It’s A Wonderful Life…it ruins my mojo.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well you know my thoughts on It’s A Wonderful Life…
Laura says
I totally understand people not loving Christmas cards- it can feel like one more busy thing to get done for moms! I will say that we hang on to ours for a year (until the next December). It is fun to use them as prayer cards to pray for all of the special family and friends in our lives. Just focusing on one a day is doable for us starting in January. Just a thought!
Darcy says
Love that idea as “prayer cards”! Christmas cards are one of my favorites! 🙂
Darcy Wise says
Receiving Christmas cards is definitely in my top 5. I enjoy hearing from people that I haven’t touched based with all year but have a special place in our history, or even friends that I see all the time, but pause and reflect on their whole family as I see their card. Last year I did a Thanksgiving card and I had left the back of the card blank, so actually felt the need to do at least a bit of handwriting on the back of each card, which at first seemed daunting, but as I continued, the more and more thankful I became for my life and those around me. I will NEVER get behind electronic cards! And by the way, your family has the most beautiful Christmas card pictures…especially enjoyed seeing the beach one…darling!
Faith says
YES!!
Top 5:
5. Fun celebrations
4. Decorations and the lights
3. Buying gifts (it’s my love language)
2. The music/church programs
1. Family time
Bottom 5:
5. Breaking down boxes
4. Wrapping gifts
3. Glittery cards/paper
2. Long lines
1. How dark it seems once the lights and decor are put away.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for sharing your list too!!
Lauren says
Your bottom 5 are spot on! Agree with all of these except Christmas cards may be even higher on the list. I love to receive them but sure hate sending them out!
Erin says
About the wrapping – same, sister, same – let’s make a Drunk Ferret wrapping club lol – Happy Holidays 🙂
Christina says
You got me with the drunk ferret. I laughed out loud! I totally agree. I dislike wrapping presents and the boxes they come to my house in.
Cris says
Did you see that TJ’s has small packages of Jingle Jangle (called Jingly Jangly) and Jingle Jangle for dogs?😊
Mix and Match Mama says
I bought some!!!
Lauren says
Hot tip…don’t lick envelopes. Use your kids old water wow pens instead!
Mix and Match Mama says
That is a HOT TIP!
Toni :0) says
I love the lights, the Chex Mix I enjoy through the next few weeks and the family time. So many things that I don’t love or are just plain exhausting: Thinking of and spending money on all the gifts to purchase and factoring in shipping times. Hoping packages I’ve ordered don’t get stolen off the porch while I’m at work. Ordering items online from websites my kids have sent me to then only get a bazillion emails from said company on sales, marketing stuff, etc. when I just wanted to be kept updated on shipping status. Soon as I receive item, I hit unsubscribe! Apple made me furious this year as they never mentioned my item couldn’t be left on porch. I checked my delivery status, said two days out. Not five minutes later after checking status, UPS is on porch, ringing doorbell and announcing UPS. My son beats me to door, darn driver hands him HIS GIFT and says “from Apple, couldn’t leave it.” Whhhyyyy in gift giving season do you announce who it’s from Mr. UPS driver??!! You just spoiled my son’s birthday gift!! My son hands me package and tells me he didn’t look at it and I’m like well, you just heard who it’s from! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ Also, I hate all the boxes too, especially after all the unwrapping of gifts is done, such a mess to break down, keep those we want and get them back in the rightful spots, and then haul others out to recycle bin. Then un-decorating the house has to be THE WORST. It’s just so much work, it’s dreary and exhausting. Time for a nap.
Mix and Match Mama says
I hope you get that nap. I might need one today as well 😉 .
Kara says
I love wrapping! but I agree with you on the clutter!? I swear every year that I will not do advent calendars for our 3 kids the next year but I cave and regret it every.single.time! haha
Jen says
The bottom for sure is going to be the Elf on the darn shelf. If I have to hear one more time “so and so’s elf brought them this or that, why doesn’t our elf do that”
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh, I should have said this too!!!!!! You are SO CORRECT!!
Toni :0) says
There’s no way a mother invented Elf on the Shelf because WHO in their right mind wants even MORE to do this time of year?? No thanks. So very happy this wasn’t a thing when my kids were small. I probably would have had to be committed. 😂🤦♀️🙄
Cris says
I don’t hate wrapping, so I get to do something nice for my sister (who takes care of me in every other way❤️) by wrapping her gifts for her. Also, one of my daughters lives locally, and she trades a year of bathing my dog (a gross job that I hate) for my gift wrapping all of her presents! Win/win!
Lauren Sheaffer Sims says
Fun list! It’s hard to believe that we’ll blink and this year’s Christmas season will be over.
Susy says
I love Christmas cards—sending and receiving!
With each card I send I think of when we met. Or why it’s so important to me to connect at least one time a year Or the value the family/ friend adds to my life. Or saying a prayer of blessing for the family! And going to the mailbox and finding their card I know they are thinking of me too. For me it’s not a chore, it’s a blessing.
Hoping this adds joy!
Alyssa J says
Glitter is from the devil. I will not open a card if I glimpse it has glitter on it.
Also, I don’t think anyone has mentioned coming up with gift ideas. Everyone already has so much and buys what they want, so I find it very difficult to shop for gifts, knowing there’s a huge chance the person likely already has it.
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!!! That could also be in my Bottom Five! That’s a great one!
Erika Slaughter says
I act like a drunk ferret when packing away all of our Christmas decor. Because I don’t care, when I get to the point of taking it all down…I JUST WANT IT DOWN!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am LAUGHING OUT LOUD, friend!
Molly says
This spoke to my soul. You are totally spot on. Love this!!
Kim says
Love top 5 bottom 5. Only one I would add to my bottom would be stockings! Like I spend so much time and energy finding gifts for my people then I have to find things to fill up a stocking for each person. I’m ready to give this tradition up.
Jeanette says
Those were beautiful Christmas cards from past years.
~B~ says
HA – drunk ferret! I am alllll the memes out there about “If it looks like a T-rex wrapped your gift, it’s from me”. And I would switch to bags, boxes…but I have a daughter who absolutely loves unwrapping a gift. I know how happy that makes her and so, I continue to wrap, despite how pathetic my gifts turn out. 🙂 Though each year I vow to hire my friend who loves wrapping (yet to be accomplished this year). Maybe next year?? Happy holidays, Shay!
Alesia says
Mine are exactly the same! I quit Christmas cards a few years ago. I always feel a little guilty when I get them in the mail, but not enough to do all the things involved. 🎄
Carissa says
These posts are so good!
Bottom 5
5. Depressing Christmas movies – wish more Hallmark movies didn’t have a dead wife/husband/mom/dad
4. That not all of the homes have Christmas lights up, the others just seem sad in comparison to those that do
3. Having trouble coming up with unique stocking stuffer ideas, especially for husband
2. Spending so much money on stocking stuffers/little things to fill them with
1. December seems to fly by and Christmas seems to come on so quickly!
Top 5
5. Receiving Christmas cards and seeing everyone’s beautiful kids/families
4. Christmas movies!!
3. Christmas music!!
2. Decorating the tree and reminiscing about past ornaments
