Hello, October!!
October is one of our very favorite months over here. We have two big birthdays to celebrate (Madeley and Me!), Halloween, lots of football, the State Fair of Texas, color weather…when I imagine Heaven, I think it will be October the entire time. 🙂
Every year, I open up my house and share a little fall home tour with you. Over the years, nothing much changes…same decorations, same style, but there’s just something so warm and inviting about getting a peek inside someone’s cozy home, so since I love looking at other people’s fall houses, I always want to show you mine too. This year, I am SO EXCITED because my house is back to normal. If you’ll recall, last year, we didn’t move back into the “main” part of the house until mid-September through the end of October (we moved in stages). Our big door across the back was even installed on Halloween day last year, so it’s so nice that this year, we have normalcy to celebrate the season.
Last year around this time…
…and this year….
Insert allllll the praise hands!!!
So, I took a few pics to share (including a few of our new spaces!) for your October 1st.
Grab your pumpkin spice latte and settle in. I don’t have a lot of captions…it’s just pics of our place. Lots of fall coziness awaits and many, many cameos by the dogs 🙂 !
Happy October 1st!
Come on in! If you were here in person, hot coffee and a piece of Pumpkin Spice Latte Bundt Cake would await.
During September, our Hobby Lobby signs says fall, but during October…
…it’s Boo to you 😉 .
Those two dogs are CRACKING ME UP in these next pics!
Our bedroom.
And then…come on upstairs! There is a lot of fall love in my new office too…
All of the kids have Halloween sheets and blankets on their beds (all of it is so old!), so here’s a little look at the little girls’ room…
Whew! That was a lot to share!
Now, some of the most common questions I get each year after this post are:
1. WHERE DO YOU STORE ALL OF THIS? In plastic bins in my attic. Nothing fancy, just big bins. Andrew hauls them up and down the attic ladder each year.
2. WHEN DO YOU DECORATE/TAKE DOWN? This year, I decorated on September 1st and then we will take it all down and put up Christmas on November 1st. Yes, I know that’s early, but it’s so much work and we love it so much, that we do it early.
3. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO PUT IT OUT? A few hours! I always do it one day while the kids are in school.
4. WHERE DID YOU BUY____? I’ve had this stuff for years and years! Some of it, over 17 years! I would say that my go-to places for holiday decorations outside of specialty stores are Pottery Barn and Hobby Lobby. My friends Amanda and Amy make all of my holiday signs that you’ll see and then my friend Lori decorates all of the plates and platters with my kids’ hand prints on them.
Also, don’t forget that we’ve updated so many rooms in our house! If you’re looking for specific sources from specific rooms, these posts here will be the best bet for you to find that information:
That’s it for this Friday! I hope you all have a wonderful start to your October!!!! I’ll see you on Monday! xx

This is so lovely and COZY!

It’s beautiful, Shay!! I would also love to see a post on how you get your kids to clean up after themselves. ??♀️ I feel like it’s all I say and do all day and there are still markers, random toys, etc. lying all over the house. What is your secret?!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m mean 😉 . The rule is that you “clean as you go” and now, it’s habit. From time to time, they’re a mess but they know that they need to clean up at some point and are really good about doing it.
Dana P says
Also, have you found a Keurig fun coffee that you like for fall? My son bought me a Nespresso last year, but it’s kind of hard to find pods for it and I was thinking of getting a small Keurig like yours. Do you have some good flavors you recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
Just basic Pumpkin Spice 🙂 ! I don’t use an Nespresso now, I so don’t know?! I’m sorry!!

Frenchie and Poppy in front of your fireplace crack me up!

Love, love the cozy and job you always do in making it so warm. Great thing about fall décor, it’s timeless and I like making it fall décor more than Halloween. With kids you need some Halloween. A big shout out to the beautiful job on the remodel, refresh. It looks so refreshing and up to date with lighter colors mixed with heavier darker furniture, which makes the beautiful furniture pop! Wonderful job, especially love the living room color change to lighter, the removal of arched patio overhang on exterior to the new straight lines and as always the powder room wallpaper makes you smile, it’s so lovely. Large sliders a huge win to add light and a great view. Beautiful, beautiful! Would love to see a lighter counter on island. The darker granite looks very nice but a fun, maybe lighter color or a bold grey & white stone to compliment the perimeter stone would be nice to see as well. Just my 2 cents. You have a great eye for design!!!
Karie L DeFrees says
Quartz counter top………I love the look of yours. I am remodeling my kitchen and would love to know your thoughts on quartz vs. granite. THANKS!!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re the same in my book! Both super durable, you can set hot things directly on both…they’re basically indestructible 😉 .
Sonya Derczo says
Where did you get the fall puzzle? I’ve been looking for one, but Hobby Lobby only has Christmas puzzles out.
Mix and Match Mama says
Amazon!!
Kelly says
Happy October 1st! I love a good home tour and yours is amazing!;).
Amanda says
So homey! I’m imagining your kids’ reaction when they come home from school on the day you’ve decorated! Question- I love the pair of doves on your family room shelves. Do you remember the brand or where you got them? I’ve wanted a pair of my own, and yours are particularly lovely.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much! I’ve had those forever and ever. I do not know where they originated from. I’m sorry!!
Gianna says
SO cozy, Shay!! I just want to make one of your delish chili recipes in that pumpkin Dutch oven, curl up and watch Hocus Pocus, all while burning a pumpkin candle! Thanks for always being the brightest light in my day! Happy October! XO
Mix and Match Mama says
Me too!!!!!! 🙂

Beautifully decorated (as per usual!) I have a question about your travertine flooring outdoors. How do you clean it? Normal soap/water/mop? And also, I think you have it around your pool as well, do you find it slippery when running around the pool? I’ve been telling my husband i want it around our new pool this summer because it looks so classy, but am worried it’ll be slippery for my 6 and 3 year old! Thanks! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! We clean it with just a bit of soap and water. I do not find that it gets super slippery by the pool. I will say though that it does “breathe” a few days every spring when it gets warmer outside and that’s a mess (it’s super wet).
Tracy Doubts says
Lovely, always inspiring. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
Amy says
It all looks so good. Do you know who made the black 3 piece bookshelf you showcased. We our on the hunt for a media center. Trying to avoid a custom built in!
Mix and Match Mama says
We bought it years ago at a random store in Mansfield, TX. I don’t even remember the name now. I”m sorry!
Joanne says
Love all the fall decor you have!
Alyssa says
Your Halloween and Christmas decor tours are always my fav posts! I decorate after Labor Day and the weekend after Halloween, no shame I just love the decorations so much. I live in NYC so I don’t have too much room to decorate, but I dream of one day having a front porch to decorate with pumpkins. Happy October!!
Lynne Thomas says
Just wondering where you found the galvanized (2) signs?
Mix and Match Mama says
Hobby Lobby! Aren’t they adorable?!
Jill says
Love all the fireplaces, pumpkins and pillows!! Very cozy!
One question, in your kitchen there are multiple dishes with candy corn….do you like candy corn or is it just for decoration?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t like it very much, but I think it’s fun to have festive candy around. My kids will grab some occasionally but mostly, it’s just easy decor.
Ramona says
Everything is so beautiful Shay but I’m patiently waiting to see the new gym. 😉
Rebecca says
I absolutely love your decorating style and even more your holiday decor. Out of curiosity because I am quite literally naive on what decorating style terms even mean (like mid century modern or modern versus contemporary ??!?!!!???) what style do you consider your home decor? Traditional with a hint French country? I love it all so much! It’s beautiful and cozy.
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say that it leans French country 🙂 .
Sharon Simmers says
Shay, your home is gorgeous! Thanks for allowing us to visit! ?
Libby says
So cozy!! You forgot to decorate the animal heads. 😉 I had a friend who detested her husband’s stuffed prizes and would decorate them. LOL
Laura says
Beautiful as always. You can tell that you really enjoy this season.
janet teeter says
can you tell me the paint colors on your walls, and on your cabinets? I think you’ve mentioned both of these in previous posts?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Sherwin Williams Moderate White! The trim is SW Antique White.
Kim says
Your house is so beautiful – I love it. Thank you for the tour!
JC Winborg says
I love all your fall decor!!! Where did you get those cute tan/white outdoor smiley pumpkins? I love them sooo much!
Mix and Match Mama says
The stone ones? Sandstone Garden in Joplin, MO!
A says
Hi Shay! Love this post and all the pumpkins!!! Did you decorate like this when you had little ones?? Any tips for decorating for other toddlers that get into everything?? Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I totally did! In fact, I have home tours here on my blog from all of those toddler years. I don’t know that I have any solid tips other than, I keep breakable things higher up and anything they can get their hands on, I’m okay (not happy, but okay) if they break (so I wouldn’t put anything priceless at their level). My toddlers grew up in a house with a lot of accessories and I think they just got used to it. I also always make sure their items are within reach too!
Anita says
Shay, can you give me the information on your leather sofa in your family room with the tv please!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s from Restoration Hardware!
paige says
Hi Shay! Do you think Andrew would do a post about your pool specs some time? We are about to start the process. I’m curious about the size…. the color selections …. and if there is anything he/you would say you wished you’d done differently (or are super glad you did!!!)!! Thank you (and I know how much we all love andrew’s posts haha!) 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I can sure ask him!
Lauren says
Can you share where you got the pillows in your office? The purple and then the pink plaid one that’s in front of it? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
The purple one is from a little boutique on our town square and then the plaid one is from Target!
Connie says
I just LOVE your home!!! Happy October!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! Thank you!!!
Constance says
So cozy! Love it! Where is your brown leather couch and chairs from in the first room (living room)?
Mix and Match Mama says
Restoration Hardware!
Laura says
Hi Shay, I went to Trader Joe’s to get a pumpkin today and tried something new. If you haven’t tried the Trail Mix crackers, you really need to. They’re so delicious. Just thought I’d let you and your readers know.
Kelly says
This is not decor related, but I have a new MUST try from Trader Joe’s. They are gluten free cinnamon coffee cake muffins and they are phenomenal! I toast them with a little butter and I am in heaven. I love your fall decorations! They are inspiring me to get mine down and put a little more effort into making my house look festive.
Mix and Match Mama says
Heading there today!! I will try some!!!
