You guys, it’s OCTOBER!
‘Tis the tradition each and every year here in blog world, it’s my annual FALL HOME TOUR 🙂 .
Nothing changes very much, but it’s always a favorite post for many of you (including my sweet Grandmother!), so I want to share it every October.
We put up the fall/Halloween decorations on September 1st and enjoy every minute of it until November 1st when we put up Christmas. We basically live inside a department store. We like to celebrate big and celebrate early. 😉
Grab that #psl, cozy socks and turn on When Harry Met Sally in the background…it’s time to cozy up and come on in. If you were here in person, you would certainly be greeted with coffee, a Three Ingredient Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffin, the smell of pumpkin spice and a hug.
Few captions, mostly pics, but as you can see, we love fall and are so happy you’re here…
Pumpkins just make me HAPPY!
Now, some of the most common questions I get each year after this post are:
1. WHERE DO YOU STORE ALL OF THIS? We used to store them in plastic bins in my attic. Nothing fancy, just big bins. Andrew would haul them up and down the attic ladder each year, but after our house flooded in 2020, we had to get a storage unit for our furniture, and after we moved back in, we decided to keep that unit for all of our fall and holiday items. Now, Andrew just takes his trailer there and loads it up with the decor.
2. WHEN DO YOU DECORATE/TAKE DOWN? We almost always decorate on September 1st and then we will take it all down and put up Christmas on November 1st. Yes, I know that’s early, but it’s so much work and we love it so much, that we do it early.
3. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO PUT IT OUT? A few hours! I always do it one day while the kids are in school.
4. WHERE DID YOU BUY____? I’ve had this stuff for years and years! Some of it, over 17 years! I would say that my go-to places for holiday decorations outside of specialty stores are Pottery Barn and Hobby Lobby. My friends Amanda and Amy make all of my holiday signs that you’ll see and then my friend Lori decorates all of the plates and platters with my kids’ hand prints on them.
Also, don’t forget that we’ve updated so many rooms in our house! If you’re looking for specific sources from specific rooms, these posts here will be the best bet for you to find that information:
That’s it for today! I hope you all have the coziest fall Wednesday! xx
Laura says
Okay whoa hold up! Lol. I have been reading for a decade and don’t remember seeing those taxidermy animal heads?! Are those new? Are they real? Did Andrew find them?! I think they’re a super unique addition to the room! I just was so surprised to see them pop up there 😂 Happy fall! Enjoy all the cozy! And PS was PSYCHED to hear the podcast back!!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’ve been there a long time. Andrew made four trips to South Africa with a ministry (four years in a row) to build a kitchen for a school and then each year, they harvested meat to fill the kitchen (that’s where those three came from). I hate them…but he’s such a rock star husband (seriously, he is AMAZING), that I try to overlook them. There are more. It’s a good thing he’s really freaking amazing.
Laura says
How did I know Andrew was involved?! What a neat back story! Also perfect explanation why I don’t remember seeing them in pictures before 😉
Alison says
This response made me giggle! Nothing about you (and I’ve been following you for many, many years) screams taxidermy decor in your home. Lol. What a perfect kind of love you two have. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Nothing. He’s gold. The minute he dies though, they’re on my curb. 😉
Natalie says
Yes first time seeing them too! Bless his heart.. you better keep them up there Shay! I think they look great! Your house looks so cozy!

I look forward to this post every year! What are some of your favorite speciality stores? I know you mentioned some of those water color signs of the lady in shoes/suitcases are from them. We have a trip to your area coming up!
Mix and Match Mama says
Those signs are from a store in Southlake, TX. I cannot remember the name but it’s on Southlake Blvd next door to the Toy Maven.
Allyson Petta says
I think you’re talking about Jordan Taylor! I live on the Keller/Southlake border and love this store!

Inna M says
Is the stone in your kitchen and fireplace naturally that color or is it lime washed? If limewashed, do you happen to know what color paint they used? Thank you!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the natural stone color. It’s called Granbury Stone!
Adrienne Garber says
Looks great, as always! I’m LOVING the light fixture over your dining table in the kitchen area. Could we get an updated view of the birthday sign wall? Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course!! That fixture is from Restoration Hardware 🙂
Lyssy in the City says
I love this so much! It inspired me to do my own tour on my blog, but I live in a one bedroom NYC apartment, so I’m dreaming of the day I have a whole house to decorate. Happy October!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ohhhhhhh! I love it! Enjoy beautiful New York in the fall!! Doesn’t it make you want to buy school supplies? 😉

Mix and Match Mama says
my local grocery store! Aren’t they fabulous?!
Amie P says
I looked back at your previous posts but don’t see the gold fireplace cover in the older pictures. Do you remember where you got that from, I love it!! I’m sure that isn’t proper word for it either.haha
Mix and Match Mama says
Good catch!! They’re new!!! They’re all from Horchow!
Cheri says
You really go BIG on decorations and I compliment you on how wonderful it all looks. Where did you get your metal Pumpkin Pie and Latte signs? Also, what is your kitchen counter top on the island, name please?
Mix and Match Mama says
I love to decorate for fall and Christmas!!! Those were from Hobby Lobby last year! That granite in the middle is Black Pearl and then the white is a quartz in the color Calcutta.
Heather says
How do you find is the best way to store all the faux pumpkins? I’ve used boxes but have found stems broken the next year. Thanks and beautiful home!
Mix and Match Mama says
In bins larger than the pumpkin so that the lid comfortably closes up. They store well on their sides too with old newspaper surrounding them.
Cheryl says
Your home is just beautiful with so many cozy touches. I am in the process of re-doing
my family room and I love the rug and blue chairs in yours. Would you mind sharing where your purchased those?
Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
The rug is from Pottery Barn (it’s probably 9 years old though) and the chairs are from Restoration Hardware. Thank YOU!!
Laura says
Your home is BEAUTIFUL and COZY!! Would you mind sharing where the end table in your family/den room (between the cream chairs) came from? I am trying to find something similar with a bottom shelf.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh, that’s an oldie but goodie. I don’t know? I bet I’ve had it 12+ years! Thank you for stopping by!!!!!

Shay, your home is gorgeous! Where did you get your leather sofa off the kitchen and the chandlier over your table by the kitchen please?
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much! Both are from Restoration Hardware 🙂 .
Tracey Steil says
Just beautiful! My favorite are the large velvet pumpkins by the fireplace. I do have one question. Do you not put up a wreath on your front door?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not. I did in my other two houses, but I don’t in this one.
Erin says
Love all the Fall/Halloween decorations! Is the gallery wall of paintings in your formal living room new?? Love it!! Where did you buy all your cute haunted houses?
Mix and Match Mama says
We did do that this year! We just took random pics we already had around the house and grouped them there! They’re all from the brand Snow Village 🙂 .
Betsy says
Where did you get the square placemats with the pumpkin plates on them?
Mix and Match Mama says
Pottery Barn
Emily says
I love seeing the pictures! What color paint is the blue/gray on your kitchen island? I looked back at your kitchen post, but didn’t see the color of the paint on the island. It looks lovely!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve tried to track that down so many times, but it’s a custom color and we cannot for the life of us, find the can with the details.
Tisha Ward says
Where are the velvet pumpkins in the library from? The ones by the fireplace
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re from my local grocery store, Market Street. Aren’t they fun?!
Jennifer says
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! Are those Gooseberry Patch cookbooks I spy?!?! If not – you need to get some. I started collecting those as a young mother and they instilled in me a love of family traditions. I was just talking about those with my new DIL last week; as a newly married mom, I would read them like books! So good. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
They are!!! They are my absolute favorite!!!!
Cindy Featherston says
Could you tell me where the round rug in your breakfast area is from? Thank you!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Pottery Barn!
Chrissy says
I think aside from the taxidermy, the most surprising thing about your house is all the books tipped over in the library!!! LOL! Doesn’t your type A self want to climb up and tip them upright?! hahahahah, it’s always a surprise!
Mix and Match Mama says
I tip them on purpose! My Type A self spent a lot of time doing that. Bahahaha!
Chrissy says
Haha omg well that explains it!!!
Allison Bosarge says
Will you not be posting a September book review?
Mix and Match Mama says
I mentioned this last week, but this time (and only this time, I promise!), I’m going to combine my Sept and Oct reviews together. I’m sorry! It will be out at the end of this month!
Amy McConnell says
One of my favorite posts of the year! You have a beautiful home 🙂 I’m an interior designer, and while so many of our clients are going more and more transitional/modern, gosh my traditional heart loves your home!
Sara says
I could possibly be the only reader SUPER interested in all your beautiful paintings. Would you ever do a dedicated post to them I’d love to hear all their back stories.
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course!!
