Hello Monday!
Grab your #psl and settle in. It’s time to get opinionated because…it’s another edition of TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE!
You guys, I did some soul searching over the weekend.
Some deep, introspective work.
I thought long and hard…and well, I actually was able to come up with…
…MY TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: THINGS ABOUT FALL.
I know.
I was surprised too.

This clearly is a testament to my dedication in bringing you the best content on the internet. I looked deep within myself and was able to come up with five things I don’t love about God’s favorite season. 😉
Here we go…
TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: THINGS ABOUT FALL

#5: PUMPKINS
Pumpkins make me happy.
I don’t care if they’re real or fake. Orange, white, green, or yellow. I love pumpkin flavoring in a coffee drink. Real pumpkin in a baked good. I like pumpkin in my savory recipes too. I even like the roasted seeds. I just love pumpkins.
I love this time of year when they’re in shop windows, on front porches, in stores and out in yards. I like driving around town and seeing pumpkins. They always make me smile, and I always think about how it was intentionally placed there. The pumpkins in my local nail salon and on the counter in the neighborhood gas station were placed there just to be festive. I love that.
Pumpkins are happiness.

#4: THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS TO CELEBRATE
The fall season is like one big holiday that lasts three months instead of just one day. This time of year there are a plethora of things to do that are “celebratory”. Oktoberfests and fall festivals are scattered about on the city’s calendar. Football season is in full swing which means big games, tailgating, and cheering on your favorite teams with others. I love to see the haunted houses popping up (that are always packed over the fall weekends), the church carnivals happening in parking lots, the State Fair of Texas opening its gates, pumpkin patches and cider mills are back open for patrons…it’s all just so celebratory. I love this about fall.

#3: THE WEATHER
I love seasons. In the summer, I want warm sunny days. In the winter, I want snowy and gray. In spring, I want cool breeze and sunshine. And in fall, I want gorgeous crisp weather that makes you want to pull on a cozy jacket.
After so many days in a row of summer heat, fall weather makes me JOYFUL. Sweater weather is my very favorite weather.

#2: FALL FOLIAGE
If you are ever in the car with me during the fall season, you will hear me point out the fall foliage the entire time. I start seeing it early and talk about it until the last leaf hits the ground. I love to watch the trees go from green to golden. I savor every step of the way (probably to the chagrin of my car mates). Every year around this time, I start itching to see foliage. Believe it or not, McKinney will get some gorgeous leaves…but it’s typically around December 1st. I need a big dose of fall well before my Christmas decorations go up. I just absolutely love the foliage this time of year.

#1: IT’S A “FEELING”
To me, fall is a feeling. There’s the anticipation of holidays and special events. There is the nostalgia that comes from recipes and certain movies. The scent of apple cinnamon and pumpkin spice bring the season to live, the sight of the leaves changing…it’s just one big season that conjures up so many memories. I love hearing college football on the TV as I walk around the house on Saturdays, I love watching Hocus Pocus for the one millionth time, and all of the chaos and craziness that comes with pumpkin carving. Fall is a feeling, and without a doubt, that is my FAVORITE thing about the season.

Sigh.
Okay.
But because I am trying my hardest to be as real as possible with you, I did come up with a few things I don’t love about this blessed season.
Here are my BOTTOM FIVE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT FALL…

#5: THE PRESSURE
I think the fall season has a lot more “pressure” than other seasons. In the winter, we’re all hibernating, in the spring, we’re anxiously awaiting summer and during the summer, we’re all kind of “checked out” a bit. But fall? Fall has expectations. Everyone is in that “back to school” mode and shuttling kids around, carpooling like crazy to new activities and extracurriculars, the newness of the school year has us working overtime with school and sports and wait, Christmas is coming? The neighbors have their decorations up (should I put mine up now too?). There are a million “things” to attend, over-scheduled calendars, and just A LOT on our plates. Fall has a pressure I don’t really find in the other season.
#4: WAKING UP EARLY
This might not apply to you, but for us, fall means early, early mornings. We are up super early and going all day. As much as I love to prioritize sleep, right now, there just is no time. All of the “fun” certainly comes with little sleep. I’m loving every minute of this fall season…but I’m also a little tired right now too.
#3: SPORTS
Yup. Here’s the deal. On two fronts, “sports” is hard for the Shull family this time of year.
On one hand, we have the Dallas Cowboys.
Sigh.
As a life long DFW resident, I can say with every fiber of my being that the Cowboys make fall MISERABLE for all who live here. It is an up and down rollercoaster ride with Jerry Jones at the controls that keeps us talking about little else all season long. Even if the Cowboys aren’t your team, they find a way into your orbit and drive you mad if you live here.
On the other hand, we have the MLB playoffs.
Sigh.
October is great if your team is winning and sucks if your team gets beat by the Yankees in the AL Wildcard Series.
Sucks.
#2: THE WEATHER
Yeah the weather is one of my VERY FAVORITE things about this season until the weather refuses to cooperate and you wake up to yet another hot day, and then dang it, the weather is awful during the fall. My mood is affected by the weather year around and there are some fall days when I’m downright snippy because for the love, it’s still 89.
#1: ALLERGIES
Spring allergies aren’t great but without a doubt, the fall ones make me the most miserable. I am so tired of scratching. And blowing my nose. And sneezing. And sleeping with my congested head propped up. And scratching some more. Fall, you would be so much better WITHOUT the seasonal allergies.
And that, my friends, is my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: THINGS ABOUT FALL 🙂 .
Now…
It wouldn’t be a TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE without Andrew weighing in too.
ANDREW’S TOP FIVE THINGS ABOUT FALL:
#5: SNOWBOARDING IS GETTING CLOSER
#4: HOLIDAYS ARE COMING
#3: FOLIAGE
#2: FOOTBALL SEASON
#1: COOLER WEATHER
ANDREW’S BOTTOM FIVE THINGS ABOUT FALL:
#5: THE STUPID HEAT STAYS LONGER IN TEXAS
#4: IT MEANS MY SUMMER ON NANTUCKET HAS ENDED
#3: BUSY SCHOOL SCHEDULES
#2: LESS SUNSHINE FOR MY TAN (don’t worry, I wear sunscreen and have skin checks!)
#1: I’M CLOSER TO PUTTING THAT STUPID CHRISTMAS TREE BACK UP
Whew!

Elspeth Mizner says
This is one of my favorite posts! I love the changing leaves and holidays and all the traditions that come with the fall, but i don’t like the cooler weather and darker days!
http://www.elspethsdaybyday.com
Addy J Robinson says
…!! I am interpreting Andrew’s answer to mean the kids won and the Big A$$ 🙂 Christmas tree will be back! Yeah!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes and amen. He’s mentally gearing up now 😉 .
lee ann vicary says
Sometimes as we age – our bodies, our wallets, and how much we value our time – come together and decide to just pay someone to do somethings. Kind of like Walmart delivery – when we were young and poor it didn’t make sense but now… it definitely does.
Tiffany says
Could not agree more!!
Laura Capp says
I hear you on the crisp weather. Chicago has been 30 degrees above average and we have been doing all the fall things in shorts and tanks. Jumping into a corn pit in shorts…. no thank you. All of that to say, I do not know how you all survive hot fall every year in Texas.
Jill Snethen says
I live about 2 hrs south of Chicago. This weather has been crazy. So HOT for Fall.
Emi says
I am so appreciative of this post because Fall is not my favorite time of year. Except I love Halloween. However, your Top Five reminded me of all the wonderful things about it! I also want to add that I like Fall because TV shows are back!
Mix and Match Mama says
YES! Great addition!!
Kim B says
Nice list! That one definitely took some thought. I remember you asking about allergy medicine recs and I’m sure others said this but in case you need to hear it one more time, have you tried a Neti pot? I hear it’s a game changer. Happy Monday!
Erika Slaughter says
I am SO READY for one of those CRISP fall days!
Faith Kapp says
Top 5
Cooler weather, comfort food season, holiday season, fun things to shop for, back to a routine.
Bottom 5
Quieter house with college kids gone, less daylight hours, getting up early, less flexible schedule, having to dress for two seasons in one day.
Debbie Hibbert says
I always love the top five/bottom five … and this was a good one!
Top Five:
1. Fall foliage (absolutely LOVE seeing the leaves change)
2. The start of pumpkin EVERYTHING
3. Cooler weather
4. Going back to standard time so it gets dark earlier (so much more cozy)
5. My fall wardrobe (I like layers)
Bottom Five:
1. Fall allergies
2. Raking leaves
3. Football (my least favorite sport)
4. Fall allergies
5. Fall allergies (they’re terrible, plus it was impossible to think of things I dislike about fall)!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, thank YOU for sharing your list too, Debbie!
Alison says
Top: putting on a cozy sweater on a crisp morning, reading a suspenseful book under a warm blanket, and all the fall comfort foods
Bottom: squirrels that use my pumpkins as their fall comfort food. 😒
Mollie says
Well speaking of pumpkins, Sandstone Gardens FINALLY replied to my emails about ordering your stone pumpkins after years of reaching out! They will be coming home this week 🎉🎉. Also, heading to Woodstock Inn next week. Happy fall to me!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?! YAY!!!!! You are going to LOVE Woodstock Inn. I wish we were on our way there too!
Ginger says
So glad you commented about Sandstone Gardens. I live in the Joplin area and didn’t realize they were selling statuary again since the fire that destroyed their building. So good to know!
Lori Bittenbender says
Yes, for the love! Texas heat in the fall! I love make fall muffins for my kids: Apple cranberry last week. Banana pumpkin this week.
Kimberly M says
Shay, I love this and that you are so honest with the beauties of Fall but also its pressures! One new pressure I might add (as Mom to a senior boy!) is it’s the time for college applications, deadlines etc! This has made this fall just a smidge more full of pressure than those years when all we had to worry about was Fall Festivals! I know God will place him where he needs to be but it’s definitely a new sense of intensity in an already busy season! I’ll be reading your top 5 over and over to help balance it all out! 🥰
Mix and Match Mama says
This is a GREAT addition to the “pressure” point. YES!
Susan says
hahaha Andrews bottom #1 almost made me spit my coffee out but I’m sure a few husbands feel that one!
Living in MN we have had 80-90 degree days for the last 3 weeks and are wondering where fall is – so thankful for the 65 high today and the leaves starting to change!!!
Summer says
SAME! 😆☕️🎄
Nanci W says
We just got back from Crested Butte Colorado and the foliage there has never been more beautiful!
Carissa says
Ooh fall is my favorite season!! Don’t know if it’s even right to come up with a “bottom five” but I’ll try!
Top 5
1. the anticipation of the holiday season!!
2. lots of family birthdays to celebrate
3. fall movies often with lots of foliage in them (real or fake I don’t care just love the feeling of it all)
4. all the apple things (taste and smell) – apple picking, cider, and especially pie!
5. daylight savings time and the cozy feeling of nights when it gets dark earlier
Bottom 5
1. all the back to school to-dos: emails to respond to, forms to fill out, open houses to attend etc.
2. school/kid friend drama that wasn’t there over the summer
3. a favorite thing about fall is all the amazing fall candle scents but a bottom to this would be when you try one and it just isn’t good, often too sweet/syrupy and the let down of it all when the name of the candle sounded so good!
4. kids back in school all day and missing that schedule-free time together over the summer
5. switching out and going through clothing, putting away summer clothes taking out fall/winter, seeing what fits the kids, what we need to buy etc. it’s a project!
Love this post! Happy Fall!
Mix and Match Mama says
I LOVE your list!!!! I love Daylight Savings TOO!
Kelly Sites says
HOT in Michigan too. We had 85 and 87 over the weekend. What in the WORLD? no!
And allergies are the DEATH of me. I feel horrible. Headache, red and itchy eyes, fatigue. Ragweed is from the devil.
But the colors are pretty, and soon it will be freezing here so I might as well enjoy the last days of hot weather. Have a great week.
SS says
We can relate… we are here too!!!!
Paula Hobbs says
All the praise hands for the BIG TREE COMEBACK!!! Poor Andrew, LOL 🙂
Paige says
I am like you. I drive around and comment on all the fall color- pointing out all the trees and commenting on how pretty their leaves are this time of year. Every year I find myself saying that this year the fall color is prettier than the last. It has become a family joke….because how can the fall color keep getting better each year? But, in my mind, it does. Enjoy!!
Blake says
One of my favorite things about fall is it’s the start of “baking season” for me! I don’t really bake in the summer, but my oven works overtime in the fall and winter.
Every time I comment on foliage (or pretty planters in the summer), I open my mouth and my mom comes out 😉
Kara says
We are heading back to Newport next week!! We went last fall, just us and now we loved it so much that we are taking our kiddos! 🙂
I also LOVE daylight savings time b/c I love being cozy in the evening when it is cool/dark!
Happy FALL!
Tina says
Top Five
I don’t have to water my summer flowers anymore
Listening to the rain and reading a book
Fall foliage
Soup Weather
Mariners playing post season baseball
Bottom Five
Time change and ALL the dark
Losing my spouse to his fantasy football team
Grey overcast skies and endless rain
Fall media advertising horror movies and shows
Being assaulted by the smell of cinnamon pinecones when you enter a store.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for sharing!!!! xx
StephC says
I hear you about the loss of your spouse to fantasy football lol Definitely one of my fall bottom 5.
Mandie Howard says
I feel you on the weather! I live in Cincinnati for crying out loud and it is still in the 80s here right now. But I am having a very hard time wearing shorts, so I am just sweating to death in my pants!
But the crisp, cool mornings are just my favorite!
I LOVE fall foliage, but I DO NOT love taking up our yard and getting the leaves up. I feel like it takes an eternity to do this!
stacy says
I totally feel you on the Cowboys. We said we wouldn’t watch them this season, and here we are, tuning in each weekend only to be disappointed.
Mix and Match Mama says
The cycle repeats every single year…
Susan Fitzpatrick says
My top 5 bottom 5 look very similar to yours except I don’t have to get up early because my kids are in their early 20’s! This weather is making me cranky. I know when my husband’s family in Boston is complaining about the heat then it’s not looking good for us in Texas! 😬
Beth Valenta says
Top 5: pumpkins, decorations, holidays, fun events, and boots
Bottom 5: allergies, waiting on the cool weather to actually come, leaves to rake, going to school in the dark right now.
I adore all things Fall so this was hard.
Alison says
Thanks for sharing!! It stays pretty hot here in Georgia too…. We tend to melt here right up until late November, early December.
Laci says
The allergies that fall brings have to be on my list as well!! They try to take me down!!
Deb says
Haha Andrew is hysterical and such a guy!!!! Fall is my favorite season too and my husband would agree with Andrew. But add raking leaves as the top least favorite
Erin H says
Gah the heat! I’m in IL and it should be lovely right now and instead it’s still in the upper 80s/90s. We had a farm party on Saturday – nothing like roasting hotdogs and painting pumpkins while still in summer clothes. It’s made me VERY grumpy. It’s supposed to cool off this week, but then back to 80s next week. We have our annual orchard trip and again… we’ll be in shorts. Ridiculous.
Carol says
Had to laugh at Andrew’s comment about putting “that tree” back up. All I could see was him on a ladder putting lights on a big tree. Years back on one of your Christmas post, I seem to remember that there was a picture of Andrew on a ladder putting lights on a big tree. Also made me wonder—What is Andrew’s favorite fall food and his least favorite fall food?
Terri says
Did Andrew use the words ‘stupid’ and ‘Christmas Tree’ in the same sentence? 🤪😂🎄
Rachel Kazmier says
I used to be all team summer but now am fully team fall! Currently in Colorado we are having one of our few grey days(we never have grey days) and it’s 50! My bestest friend from childhood has been here all weekend. We have been hiking, chatting, and enjoying the leaves. Colorado falls I think are simply the best. Crisp cool mornings, gorgeously warm days but with a fall undertone, and bright blue skies! I retire from teaching soon and can’t wait to hit up the NE in the fall! If I were you’d I’d be in Nantucket all fall long every weekend!
Natasha says
I think the reason fall is not my favourite is because after fall comes winter. And here in Ontario winter is too long, too dark, and too cold.
Also, my Blue Jays are doing their best to avenge your Red Sox! It’s been an exciting two games, thus far!
Barb says
Go Blue Jays! ⚾️😊
Jenny says
That picture in the kitchen has me cackling! It looks like Andrew is perched on a stool with a man sized body and teeeeeeny tiny kid feet! Haha once you see it you cannot unsee it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Now, I can’t un-see it! Bahahahaha!
Lori R says
You nailed it, definitely number 1, the feeling!!
Lorraine says
I love your top five/bottom five posts every time!! My entire family loves making our own, inspired by your posts. ❤️.
My top is just being outside!! Getting to go for a walk any time of day. Yes please!!
My bottom is mosquitoes!! I’m always longing for one early random hard freeze so they die.
Katie Compton says
Ooooh… this is fun!! I had to do some soul searching for my bottom five too. Ok here goes:
Top Five:
1. Blue Ridge mountain foilage
2. So much to celebrate- my birthday and anniversary in October, plus all the holidays
3. College football
4. The start of all things COZY!
5. All my favorite units in teaching- fall is the start of lots of fun in 2nd grade!
Bottom Five:
1. STINKBUGS!! Not sure if it’s just a VA thing but goodness… they are everywhere.
2. Dressing for two seasons in one day
3. The changes in weather can give me headaches
4. Political ads during election years!
5. It’s over too fast… 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I really want to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains!!
Katie Compton says
I’m in VA and just about a 20 min drive from Shenandoah National Park, home of Skyline Drive. My husband and I were engaded in the park 25 years ago! Please come to visit! I promise to make you my famous cranberry orange cookies (literally have won a cookie contest!), have coffee ready, a candle burning, and cozy blanket waiting!
Traci says
You should! I grew up there and there is no other place like it. It could be tied to a visit to Washington DC, if the kids have never seen the sights there.
Hope says
To me fall is drinking my French Vanilla Cappuccino every morning, attending college football games, bonfires and October baseball!!!!There is nothing like baseball plays offs and football. Go Yankees😊
kristen says
I can’t find one single point of disagreement on your list on either end (except the Cowboys don’t stress me as much)! Thanks for the reminders about savoring these special months!
sandi says
Collectively everyone’s top five are mine too because this is my favorite time of year!
Bottom Five: I had to borrow one from a fellow reader… the amount of school emails.
There is zero sadness surrounding the fact that this is the last year of receiving school emails. As soon as I post this comment I am adding a to do for my August 2026 calendar… Celebrate the End of School Emails! It will involve chocolate probably in milkshake or ice cream form. Then I will collapse in a fetal position and lament the caboose of the family going to college. Adding this to my calendar now!
Mix and Match Mama says
The school emails are REAL! I totally agree, Sandi!
Courtney says
When I saw today was top/bottom for Fall my immediate reaction was: “there’s no way she has a bottom 5” LOL! Although it’s a solid bottom…..that pestering southern heat irritates me every year come October 1!
Mix and Match Mama says
It took a lot of thought and prayer to come up with these five 😉 .
Kim Hickman says
I love pumpkins, fall garlands with orange lights. Very cozy! I do NOT love the South Texas heat. It’s unrelenting and definitely makes me grouchy on a routine basis.
Caitlyn Blalock says
Shay I’ve realized I read your blog everyday and have for years now and never comment?! Why I have no idea! You truly inspire me to make life “cozier” enjoy the small things and savor each season! I absolutely look forward to waking up, getting cozy on the couch with a cup of coffee and reading your blog. Truly, it brings me happiness! So, thank you!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Goodness, THANK YOU! You truly have no idea how much this means to me. Thank you, thank you. xx
Holly C says
These are all so great Top Five and Bottom Fives… **PSA** I found the PUMPKIN CAKE CARRIER** it was on Amazon….such a cute/clever way to carry your fall treats and a GREAT gift idea… thanks for sharing!!!
Debbie Dunbar says
I love the colors, smells, temperatures, decorations, and events of fall. I do not like that as a teacher it signals the end of my glorious summer break, or the closeness of winter temperatures and weather. I do not like the time change which means it gets dark at 5 PM! I don’t like having to wear closed shoes and layers!
SS says
Shay… these are so fun!!! Kiddo and I did it….
Kiddo Top 5 in no order Fall Attire, ride her quad and play golf without sweating too much, Food loves potato soup, cute photos, carving pumpkins. Bottom – weather hot cold, warm back to cold, Allergies, seasonal places close like ice cream shops (end of the month and they are done until March), School back in session, the late fall cold breezes.
Mine – Top Fall Colors, Cool nights, Aurora Chances increase (2x last week for us), Apples/pumpkins – picking desserts, holiday lights, bonus we don’t have to have the heat or AC on for a few weeks!!!! Bottom – Crazy weather – cold, hot, super dry, too wet, TIME CHANGE ugh, Snuggle in or bonfires early, getting all the stuff put away before the weather get yucky, knowing what is to come ….I mean that *s* word in the north! LOL!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love your list, friend!! Thank YOU!
Andrea Conrad says
Shay, I am shocked (SHOCKED!) that you could ever come up with 5 things you don’t like about fall. I really didn’t think you had it in you 😂
Mix and Match Mama says
ME. EITHER.
Kelly says
I have a suggestion for travel for next fall. We also live in a state that is way too hot in the fall, so we have started taking a couple of weeks at the end of September/ beginning of October and going to Colorado. The trees are spectacular and the weather is much cooler. It’s like I get two falls now – an early fall when my heart says that it should be fall and the actual fall where I live in mid- November. It’s made my attitude towards fall much better now that I get to experience cooler temperatures when the calendar says it’s fall.
bette says
fall is my most favorite season, so i had to dig really deep for my bottom 5, which i’m sure i’m in the minority for feeling this way for points 4/5.
top 5
5 – it’s football season. go raiders.
4 – i get to wear my cardigan sweaters.
3 – i love the colors. 🤎💛🧡 are my favorites.
2 – christmas is just around the corner.
1 – i am so thankful for cooler temps. i am not sad to see you go, summer.
bottom 5
5 – i am not a fan of halloween. i just don’t get it.
4 – pumpkin spice latte is overrated.
3 – school is back in full swing.
2 – christmas is coming, so parking lots are overcrowded.
1 – it starts getting darker earlier.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love this list so much! Thank you so so much for participating!
Marla says
I love these posts so much Shay. For my allergies I use a Neti Pot and do two nose sprays am & pm. Azelastine and Fluticasone or Flonase: one spray in each nostril of both meds morning and night. It has taken me years to find something that works and this has been the best so far. If I am still having issues I will take a Mucinex (just the regular one) for drainage and Sudafed (plain Sudafed which is the small red pills ) for headache and pressure . You probably know this but I wanted to share in case it is something you have not tried .
Thanks for all you do for us,your readers! We appreciate you.
Pamm Heath says
I don’t really have a comment on Fall other than God really has an imagination, and we are so blessed by it! However, I just want you to know that your blog is the highlight of my mornings. I don’t always get to all of them right away, but at some point in the day, I have my “i have 5 minutes – go to Shea’s blog” moment, and I look forward to that time. BTW …. Blue Ridge Mountains – make it happen! You won’t regret it if you’re a Fall girl.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well goodness, this just means more to me than you will ever know. Truly, thank you so much for being here. xx
Leslie S says
Hey Shay – happy fall!! Any chance you have a list of good fall/seasonal books? Looking for some cozy reads to get in the fall vibe 🍁
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s an oldie but still a goodie! https://mixandmatchmama.com/2019/09/all-the-fall-giveaway/
Dana says
I would love a top 5 bottom 5 on parenthood! One a lot of us can relate to and curious what everyone’s lists would be!!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a GREAT idea!!
