Happy happy happy Monday, friends!
We spent the weekend in OKC watching Smith row which was a super sweet time to just enjoy our girls…
I know you came here this morning for a dose of happy (which it will be!), but dang, I’m tired of having to be extra happy because the world is extra crappy. The Allen Premium Outlet Mall is 6.4 miles from my home. I’m heartbroken (and frightened!) over what happened there this weekend. I’m not going to get into that here (as this is our designated happy place online), but please know, I’m incredibly upset by it.
Guess what we are going to talk about today?
It’s a BIG DAY over here because I’m finally sharing our NEW HOME GYM!
I mean, it was new two years ago, so now it’s just our “home gym” but you get the point.
Let’s backtrack…
Way back in 2020, we set out to add on to our home…
…here is the BEFORE pic and then…
…here is the AFTER pic.
When we built our home in 2014, life just looked different. We had half as many children, and I only needed a very small space to run my business. Fast forward a few years, and we knew we wanted to add on my office, but we had enough space (when we decided to build up), that we also added on AN UPSTAIRS LAUNDRY STATION, LARGER FAMILY ROOM, MADELEY’S BEDROOM, ANOTHER FULL BATHROOM, MY OFFICE and…A HOME GYM 🙂 .
I’ve been chronically the journey from the beginning and today, I’m sharing the deets from our home gym. We have loved having a gym inside our home and use it every single day.
Since so many of you have asked, I thought I’d share the photos and some info today 🙂 .
Ready, set, time to workout…
Come on down the hall!
And step into our gym 🙂 .
Andrew has figured out a way for us to maximize every inch while still giving us room to move equipment about and allow at least two or more people to really workout in here at the same time.
We have a Tonal…
…we have a dry sauna…
…we also have…
…a fun place to hang fun K-State stuff from when Andrew played…
…it’s a really great space!
We also have A TON of storage in here for our ski/snowboarding equipment, our winter weather gear and SO MUCH MORE! Our Matrix Climbmill is about 8 years old, and we’ve never had a single problem with it. It’s been a great purchase and lived for years in the garage until we moved it up here.
Just so much storage…
…and even a ladder for the harder to reach places.
And that’s our home gym!
I don’t have a lot of specific deets because well, Andrew ordered everything, and it’s been two years, butI know the brand of most of the equipment is Rogue. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section though, and I’ll try and answer as many as I can!
Don’t forget, you can check out MY WORKOUTS IN A WEEK right now along with ANDREW’S BEACH READY WORKOUT #2 plus, make sure you check out THIS POST and THIS POST for some of Andrew’s other workout options. THIS POST HERE though includes video links should you need them.
Don’t forget, if you missed our other recently added/renovated rooms, they’re right here…
That’s it for this Monday!
I’ll see you back here tomorrow! xx
Elspeth Mizner says
Really love the idea of storing winter gear in there too! So smart!

Beth Knecht says
Shay, I thought of you all when I heard of the events, thinking it might be near where you live. So so sad! Our world needs more light!
Mary Brown says
Beautiful space! What kind of flooring is in the gym?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s from rubberflooringinc.com.
Renee says
Praying that God gives you a sense of peace today.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind.
Darcy says
Thank you for sharing this verse today…love that reminder.
Sheaffer says
I think we have 1 set of weights in our coat closet. I THINK. And I think they’re 6 pounds. Just fyi. 😉
Cris says
Headed over to Sheaffer’s blog to read about her home gym. It sounds more like my cup of tea 😉 Shay, yours is gorgeous!
Mix and Match Mama says
I just lol!
Lisa D says
Such a great space!
Going outside to take a walk now that I’m feeling a bit guilty! 😉
Kimberly Gray says
Deets on the Tonal please ! Worth the investment? Pros and Cons ? I see you have more “traditional” workout equip too so I’m wondering if you feel like you need both ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew loves the Tonal. I think it’s okay, but honestly, he just knows more about fitness than me, so he can whip it around and use it quickly/effortlessly/efficiently where it takes me longer to maneuver it/find the right moves as I’m just not as familiar. I would say he incorporates it in all of his workouts. I use it on occasion/
Shana says
Have you ever tried a program, though? They have all different lengths and styles (like 20 min ones geared towards runners, ones that you can change the length of depending on how much time you have, ones that are only 3 days a week, etc) and then the instructor leads you through all the changes in arms/attachments. We got ours last June and I have never loved lifting or a piece of workout equipment more! Now that I’m comfortable using it, I find it easier and waaaaay more efficient than traditional equipment.
Mix and Match Mama says
I have! I haven’t found an instructor that I just love. Do you have any recs? I would HAPPILY take them!
Molly says
Thank you so much for sharing this! I kept thinking I missed the post, it looks awesome! Two quick questions: will you have a home gym in your Nantucket house? And do you let your kids use the gym or have suggestions for kids who want to “workout”? Our oldest is 9 and can’t wait to lift (we don’t let him use weights while he’s still growing). Thank you for posting workouts too, I’ve been doing Andrew’s latest workout you posted and love it! This was such a fun post to see!
Mix and Match Mama says
We do not have a home gym on Nantucket. Our kids do use it for a variety of reasons. It’s a great place for my girls to work on their jumps for cheer, Smith does lift weights and sometimes, K will do the step mill while watching TV…all basic things at this point.
Molly says
Awesome! Great tips! My girls find any and all places to do gymnastics 🤪 Thanks for all the great content!
Annette says
I understand the desire to be positive. But please rethink this post. It is a total dishonor of those slain in your community. If you want to be silent on gun violence (an option we really don’t have any longer), at least go silent in their honor.
Mix and Match Mama says
I appreciate your passion. I don’t really think “going to work” (which is what I’m doing here this morning) is a “total dishonor of those slain in my community”. Andrew has to show up at State Farm today. My kids’ teachers all had to show up at school. Ashby’s doctor had to show up. As did the nurses. I think it’s absolutely appropriate to be passionate about this topic, but this is my job, and I’m showing up here today to (hopefully) do it well…to be a bright spot in someone else’s day.
Whitney says
Shay, you are always so positive and have the best responses to comments. I read every day and also made my daughter your sausage balls this morning for breakfast because they are her favorite 🙂 Thanks for showing up for work today!
Lori says
I appreciate how you handled it. You acknowledged how awful what happened in Allen, TX is, but still brought light to my day. Thank you! Keep doing what you’re doing!
Kelly says
Thank you for being true to you, and not allowing others opinions to bully you in to changing. I so appreciate both your compassion for others, as well as the light you bring to others here. Many are blessed by your willingness to show up to work on the hard days, as well as the lighter ones:-)
Marla says
Hi Shay!
First, I love your happy space BUT I think this space is for sharing….and that isn’t always happy. Please know we are here for ALL the stuff. The mall shooting was awful and I am so sorry it hit so close to home. Prayers being said for everyone involved and for a nation that can seem unsettled and scary.
Second, your home gym looks amazing. What a convenience! Something tells me I would still find excuses not to use it though unless we are counting the sauna. LOL!
Finally, this week’s menu may be my favorite yet. I am making every single recipe and am so happy to have that accomplished this morning! Thank you for all you do!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Marla, you know how much I adore you! Thank you for your comment today. You are one I think of so often. xx
sandi says
The attention to detail with storage spots for the snowboards and winter equipment is fabulous. It’s a great home gym, but being able to store all of that winter gear together and not take up space in bedroom closets is forward thinking.
Sarah M. says
What is on the floor? Do you have any special supporting beams under that room? (I assume it’s on the second floor?) How often do you use the sauna?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, our primary bedroom and bath are underneath this space, so they reinforced all of that. Andrew uses the sauna every single day. He was just in there like 3 minutes ago while I stood outside chatting his ear off about a topic… #captiveaudience 🙂 . The floor is from rubberflooringinc.
Talia says
What an amazing space! It has everything needed to live a healthy life. Thank you for sharing! (and for the workouts!)
MS says
Would love to know where you ordered your gym floor from. And the brand of sauna you purchased if you are happy with it.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh, I need Andrew to help me with these questions! The floor is 1/2″ mega rubber rolls commercial rubber sports flooring from rubberflooringinc.com . The sauna was custom made by a company in Fort Worth. We picked out all of the pieces and they built it out for us. Thank you!!
Norah Randles says
I am literally about to expand for a home gym and sooo excited!!can you share your source for the mirrors and how you hung them? We are also trying to decide on flooring….what did you all use and do you love it? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
The flooring is 1/2″ mega rubber rolls commercial rubber sports flooring from rubberflooringinc.com. We had a glass company (that did all of the glass in our home) come in and measure/cut/install the mirrors.
Elizabeth says
Do you still go to an outside the home gym to work out?
Mix and Match Mama says
I cancelled my gym membership about two years ago and now, I use our home gym and then, I go to specific classes (yoga, etc) for “extra” things outside of weights and cardio.
Stacie says
What a functional space! I have tons of questions about the Tonal. Is it mounted on the mirror? Looks like it requires just a standard plug. Does it require a monthly subscription service?
Mix and Match Mama says
It is just plugged and mounted to the wall, and then the mirror was cut around it (so it’s mounted to the sheetrock and not the glass). It does come with a monthly/annual subscription.
Kasi says
I am local and would love to know who you used to cut the mirror around it and did they deliver/hang it too? Thx!
Mix and Match Mama says
We use Sportsman Glass!
Theresa Jenkins says
Do you still have your hydrow?
Mix and Match Mama says
We do! We keep that in the garage. This way, we can open the doors, and it feels more like you’re rowing outside.
Chrissy says
Where is your rower?!
Mix and Match Mama says
We keep that one in the garage as we like to row more in an “outside” environment. I don’t know? It just feels more natural than inside.
Trudi says
I just wanted to send you a big hug Shay, everything seems extra heavy at the moment. I can’t imagine what you must go through as a Mum when this happens again & again, especially when it’s so close to home. Things in the UK aren’t exactly great at the moment, despite what this weekend may have shown, but thankfully gun violence isn’t something we face. The solution seems obvious to me, but there appears to be too many needless obstacles in the way. Take care xx
Laura says
What a great use of space. I love the idea of a sauna in the house.
Kary says
I immediately thought of you and your sweet family when I heard the news this weekend. So grateful you weren’t there. Actually you were in my hometown of OKC. 🙂
I appreciate your happy place and think you do an amazing job keeping it that way. Gosh, I’ve been a reader since Smith was a baby. Have a great day.
Anna says
Where did the mirrors on the wall come from? we’ve been looking for some for our workout area. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
We had a glass company make them. They came and measured the space and then cut them at their warehouse and installed them.
Kim says
Hello Shay! I love your home gym. We live in your area. Do you happen to know the name of the glass company that you used? We need some mirrors in our gym.
Mix and Match Mama says
We use Sportsman Glass!
Sheri says
What a cool space! It looks so good and the sauna. That is fun!
Taylor Montesinos says
Thank you for a place of normalcy this morning. As a mama and educator, I am terrified of the events that are happening in our world. Thank you for allowing this to be a place my mind can escape the scaries for a few minutes. ♥️
Mechelle Dockall says
Thanks for sharing. You and your family were the first thing I thought of when I heard about the shooting. So sad, I live in Houston, it scares me to watch the news.
Holly says
Thank you for being a happy space on the Internet. It is so needed right now.
Thanks for sharing your home gym!! Do you have a rower as well? If you do, you like it?
Mix and Match Mama says
We do! We have a Hydrow! You can read about it here: https://mixandmatchmama.com/2022/07/hydrow-review/
Erika Slaughter says
It’s SUCH a great space! You have no excuses with that gym! haha!
Linnane says
Hi! Do you still have your Hydrow rower? And did you have a treadmill as well?
Mix and Match Mama says
We still have our Hydrow (and keep it in the garage), and no, we do not have a treadmill. I’m super curious though about the Peloton tread!
Kacey says
I’ve been interested in getting a spin bike or rower, but am not ready to get both. SO…if you could only invest in one, which would you choose? For reference I do go to spin classes so I know what that’s all about, but just have a feeling I’d love a rower! Ahh, I’m so torn!
Mix and Match Mama says
Have you read my review on my Hydrow? I think that will help you make a better decision! https://mixandmatchmama.com/2022/07/hydrow-review/
Tiffany Roland says
Is the pull-up bar Rogue brand?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!
Tish says
Thank you for sharing! I love the gym space! My one question is how you handle the locker room smell? Boys/men sweat SO much more when they workout. Do you have issues with it smelling funky or a tip to keep it smelling good?! With 3 teenage boys of my own and a husband who work out, I need the help! haha!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well with three teenage boys, I think it might be impossible to keep it smelling nice! We wipe down everything after every use (in the closet, you’ll see wipes and Lysol). We also mop the floors each week too. I think the high ceiling helps as well as the ceiling fan, but with three boys…Godspeed. 😉
K.K. says
Shay, it’s so good to see you here! Loving the home gym, and it’s especially nice to see how you guys optimized the space upstairs… You have a lot of fun spaces in the addition!! I also agree about the sadness of the weekend, and I’m praying with you for all impacted – both close-up and from afar.
Amie says
I mean I feel like anyone who has read your blog for any length of time knows 100% you love Jesus and people. I appreciate this happy space to come to in light of all the terrible things happening. Keep doing you!!
Sam says
How often do you use the sauna?! I know it’s so good for you but brutal to sit through!
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew sits in it every day. I sit in there if I don’t feel well or sometimes, I’ll do my abs in there. I don’t love it nearly as much as Andrew does.
Marla says
Love your dry sauna! Can you share the name of the builder? We live in Dallas and I would like to check them out. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I just texted Andrew. Stand by! I know we pieced it together. Someone framed it out, someone put in the tile, someone else did the glass and then someone else did the benches.
Marla says
We’ve built 3 houses. I know how that goes. 😆 But you know what you want. Having a great builder that works with you makes all the difference.
Julie Murrah says
I would love any information you could share regarding the company you used for the sauna construction. I’m working on having one custom built into a space in our home gym.
Mix and Match Mama says
We used diamondfitness.com for the sauna!
Connie says
Thanks for your post today even with the awful things happening! I saw a McKinney police car on the news this weekend and immediately thought of you and that it must be close to you.
Raquel Whatley says
Hi Shay, I think I remember you mentioned some time ago that Andrew had a degree in Architecture, or something like that. Heck, maybe I’m making it up but feels sort of right. Anyway, I was wondering, how do you plan the space you are remodeling? I need to remodel my master bath and am a very visual person so unless I see it drawn out, I can’t really envision it. Do you have a software you use to plan out your remodels?
Mix and Match Mama says
He has a degree in Construction Science Management, but we used the same architect for this project as the one who initially built our home. We told him our ideas, and he drew it out for us.
Hayley Beck says
What made you put your gym on the second floor? Do you ever worry about dropping heavy weights (I’m imagining how my husband lifts heavy ones and then drops them!!) causing any damage to the floors since it’s an upstairs vs a concrete hard downstairs floor? Idk why this worries me but I felt the need to ask!! I love all of it and was chuckling to see a sauna when you can just go outside here in Texas most of the year to feel the heat! 😛
Mix and Match Mama says
To add a home gym to our home, the only way we could go was up (not the ground floor). We don’t worry about it at all. Our second story carries so much weight on a normal day (furniture, people, etc) that I really don’t think there’s any way one dumbbell falling could possibly go through the floor. Our second story is really reinforced.
CH says
Andrew needs to post about his sauna routine! And does he cold plunge too?
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
I had no idea a shooting happened in Allen until Dustin told me and then reminded me that we drove by that outlet several times while we were there. So crazy to think about and so sad.
I have been waiting on you to post about your home gym! I love it!! I love that you made it so light and bright and cheery! Love the sauna too!
MeetTheShaneyfelts
Courtney says
Hey! Love this space! Can I ask were the wights/weight rack came from?
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re all Rogue!
Purvi says
Hey Shay, I’m building out my home gym and looking for a compact power rack. Would love to know what you guys ordered. It looks like it is attached to the wall around a doorframe. Love the compact size with a lot of functionality 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Hi! Andrew bought that from Rogue but then cut it down to fit our door frame (it did not come that way). He specifically cut it and made it custom for our space.
